They look horrible, especially on a '28'29.
One of the most beautiful style radiator shells, modelled off the Lincoln, is obliterated & the car then comes to resemble an axle breaking Chev.
Even when most of the roads were unsealed, there were no ''stone guards'' made for '28 '29's, & they were rare for '30 '31.
With a Model A, ''less is more''.

It would have saved me a bucket of money when my wife was driving 4 years ago and followed too close to a gravel truck. Got one on now.

Just last week my brother was driving my car and a piece of plastic fell off the trailer in front of him. Flew directly into the stone guard at 50mph. Put a huge dent in the stone guard, knocked off a radiator badge, pushed the stone guard back against the grill shell denting the whole upper portion of the shell, and knocked off the ford emblem on the grill shell. All this being said, it would have cost me a $550 radiator if the stone guard hadn't been there. I used a piece of wire to pull the stone guard back into a somewhat straight alignment. Now it's hiding the ugly dent in the grill shell. But it's just a driver anyways.

I too, prefer the looks of a Model A without the stone guard, but after spending more than $800 for a nice Berg's radiator, I'm using one on my car to protect my investment.

Exactly! Where did you get yours? Speedway has it for $115, the others sell it for $150+

I got mine 3 years ago at Snyder's. It is stainless steel and pretty good quality, but I don't recall the price.

That's your OPINION. I have a 28 and a 29, and I have them on both and I LOVE the way they look.

Sorry, Wayne. It's in perfect shape. With the amount invested in the period Stone Guard, I'd have a difficult time letting it go.

Plating is expensive!!

Regarding stone guards: I have a stock '28 CC Pickup and prefer it without one. I am not concerned about radiator damage as I don't drive the pickup much.
I put one on my '29 Phaeton when I bought it 15 years ago because the radiator looked bad and the shell was very poor. The stone guard hid both defects. I have since replaced the radiator and have a replacement shell that will be installed when I feel the urge to do so. I have become accustomed to the way the stone guard looks and will likely install it on the new shell.
My driver/Phaeton is not even close to stock as to how it is "dressed" but I like the way it looks. (See avatar) When I drive by, you can smile or look away in disgust. Either reaction is acceptable to me.

I got mine from Speedway. Lowest price and very nice quality stainless steel.

Funny this topic came up again. I have one on my 29 CCPU to protect my new Berg.
I would prefer not to have it but after yesterday... I am glad I do!

Running 45 down nice blacktop... ahead was a darn buzzard in the road... It decided to fly straight toward me and slammed into my stone guard. Bird.... no more... Berg no damage!!! So it is going to stay on!

I put 825 miles on my A in 5 months. After reading this thread, I have a new found appreciation for the stone guards! They are $160 including the hardware kit from Mike's. I'm adding it to my Model A Wish List.
