40 convertible w/s stainless ?
I have a pretty nice set of outer windshield trim to install on my 40 convert but I have no clips, I know they come with the drake repops, but does anyone sell them separate? Maybe someone has a pic and I can fab some. Thanks!

Re: 40 convertible w/s stainless ?
Before Drake made his sets I made several pair of the splice clips to sell used 37-40 Conv/Woody windshield trim. I made the splice clips from 48 Ford door stainless as donor material. I always had a original on hand to copy but with trial and error you can get it right. My starting point was bending the stainless over the just right diameter screw driver shaft, then round the visible lower part to shape with a file. The other end is just a right angle. You already have the windshield stainless as a guide. No great skill needed just trial and error.

Re: 40 convertible w/s stainless ?
It really is pretty easy to make them. Stainless is tough but like NOSpartsman said, bend the curve first, measure down how far the straight part goes before it makes a right angle bend under the glass, even with the metal that makes the opening. I will take some pictures and send them to you as I have your em address.

Re: 40 convertible w/s stainless ?
KSFORTYFORDS- Not sure the picture helps all that much, if I had a clip that wasn't installed it might help. I measured the still installed original clips on my 40 convert and they were .412 wide. If you cut a strip of stainless that wide, polish it, curve one end to cup over the 2 ends of the large piece to hide the joint, round that end that goes closest to the glass, measure down to the part of the cowl underneath the w/s glass and rubber that is 90 degrees to the glass and put a 90 degree bend in the stainless you will have your clip.
The clips remain in on the car even when the w/s and rubber are removed. If you PM me your em address I can send you a picture of an installed clip but since it is behind the w/s wiper tower you really can't see anything but the width ( .412) Like nospartsman said, they are easy to make. I had to make some for a 40 convert I restored for a customer, luckily, I had my own to measure. |

Took my guy about an hour to make 4 of them for my 39's.
Stainless banding ( strapping ) also works as the material to use. |

Re: 40 convertible w/s stainless ?
I have the same problem, but wasn't going to do anything because they're hidden by the wiper towers I think.Besides I don't think there were any clips on the car originally. One of my mouldings overlaps slightly.

If I were making the decisions on banning folks here it certainly would be a different bunch then what I have seen. I would say more but I probably would be banned.

Re: 40 convertible w/s stainless ?
There were (always) clips originally. If the ends of your stainless molding overlap, the trim is either damaged and / or not installed "deep enough" to the body.

Re: 40 convertible w/s stainless ?
The end of one of my moldings looks like it overlapped originally. You can see a stain line, and the end is swollen so that it fits on top of the other end.Go figure.I'm going to take a closer look.I just had the windshields installed the other day.

Re: 40 convertible w/s stainless ?
Also Kube can you take the mouldings off and on once the windshields have been installed without taking the windshields out?

Re: 40 convertible w/s stainless ?
Milt, The pressure the glass and rubber exerts on the stainless will prevent you from removing it (stainless) without at minimum loosening the interior moldings.
