Dumb is as dumb does
I was installing the carb back on my "A" when I dropped one of the mounting bolts. It went to the place that all cars have where you will never find it again. No problem, just go get another bolt, so I did. I put the new bolt in the front hole and started to tighten then up. The rear bolt was tightened first. when I started to tighten up the front bolt [the new one] I heard a crack. The front bolt was to long and was pushing on a casting ridge on the Zenith top. The result of this is that the rear section of the broke off due to pressure applied by the front bolt. I will sure keep this mind when working on the carb not to use a too long bolt. Something to think about. Steve

When I bought my model a truck the carb was broken just like that. Mystery solved.

Re: Dumb is as dumb does
Note: FWIW
Not all carbs are manufactured the same in that area. Just because one bolt did not break one carb does not mean that it is safe to use that bolt on another carb ! If the bolt is 1 inch or less from end to end you should be OK. Last edited by Benson; 05-24-2019 at 04:41 PM. |

I think most, if not all of us have things like that.
And if you haven't....you're not doing it right.

Re: Dumb is as dumb does
Also, always tighten both bolts at the same time.

As my Pastor told our softball team once..."let you without error cast the first softball"...
I refer to "these moments" as learning experiences. Others will benefit from your post. Thanks, Chap |

photo.
Click photo for larger image. Notice if you put bolt in rear hole it will not break the flange ... Last edited by Benson; 06-09-2019 at 05:55 PM. |

Re: Dumb is as dumb does
Another "oh-oh" moment - bolted up a Dodge flathead six, new pistons, bearings, you know the drill. Snugged up the pan, manifolds, ready to fire up and just before turning the key my towheaded son of six asks if "this" is important. "This" was a rod bearing half. Whew.
