Default English and american language !

We Limeys, credited with inventing the English language sometimes get confused with American "English" and for example......

Fender !!!!.......that's a wing..

Trunk !!!!........ well that's a boot..

Hood !!!.......that's bonnet..

Gas !!!.........that's petrol..

Carburetor!!......that's a carburettor

Sidewalk !!!..... that's a pavement

Centre !!!.........that's centre..

Automobile !!!......motorcar..

UK !!!........England being the larger part

Doubtless many of we Limeys are keen to hear a few more words from over the pond.

Please send us a list and we'll see if we can translate?

By the way, other than being a fish.....what's a perch ?

I learn my British English Automotive language from Wheeler-Dealers.

We have trucks and you have lorrys.
Your centre is our center.
That white metal is A-LU-MIN-UM here, you guys call it A-LU-MIN-E-UM.
We have generators and you have dynamos.

A perch is what a Limey sits on.
Hate your movies... Can't understand a word you say.
Two fingers up? Explain that one!

My favorite was when a girlfriend told me she wanted me to "knock her up in the morning".

I dont' even want to get into English vs American English. Myself being USA born and bread, but "English" being one of my worse subjects in high school (I was lucky to get a C out of it, and the only reason for that, in the 1970's being on the Football team helped there, lol). I took German in high school as a language elective, and did better in German (A student) than I did with my own native English.. I thought "Grammar" was the old lady we used to visit during the Holiday season..

In the Air Force, I was stationed in Germany and did very well there with the language in communicating. Spent some time in England while over there and I couldn't understand a word you guys were saying to me.. hahhah. I was asked if I had a "Fag", and my reply was, "No, that wasn't allowed in the Military.."

Not a clue.. lol.. The Brit looked at me weird and said, "You mean you guys aren't allowed to smoke in the service?" and my reply to that, "Not with a Fag we aren't.. " lol

That, and you would get arrested on a hate crime if you "murdered a fag" over here..

Alan,

I beg to differ; I really like British films and the works of British authors.

When I was a kid my folks has a Simca. The repair manual was translated from french into English by an Australian. My first experience with "Spanners", and "Flexion Units".

Dave, British pronunciation and idioms unique to GB loses the American audience.

How about a wind screen?
Oh yeah don't for Lucas electric lights, switches & wiring!!!!
Years & years ago some buds thought they would play a prank with me & setup a blind date with limey girl.
When we entered their house this large breasted gal comes to the balcony railing & yells OK which one is mine? Party was on I can tell ya.
