Default Ford VIN "star" stamp

I'm needing a "star" stamp like Ford used at the beginning and end of its VINs.

Can anyone tell me where I might be able to buy one?

Thanks, Jim

I can't help you but I have often wondered what the star represents. End of number sequence?

I think it was a security thing. Its pretty easy for anyone to come up with number stamps, but a bit more challenging to get a star.
Also by stamping a star at both ends of the VIN someone could not just add more digits and create their own unique number from an original.

McMaster-Carr has stamps all right, but will the six and nine be the correct Ford font? Also, notice that the number one character is the letter I.

I looked at Mac Van Pelt's site ( http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...ialnumbers.htm ) and it states that the "new" digits appeared in the 1940 KRW catalog, so I'm assuming that cars earlier than '40 would be the old (common) style digits?

Wrong conclusion.

Number style changed in early 1931 during production of the Model A.

Anyone got the Ford Service Bulletin, Subject No. 6000 (Engine) Page 22
so we can see when it was issued.

The reference you are looking for is Page 542, February 1931. You can safely bet that "early 1931" is correct based on my having been around (and owned) numerous Model A's for quite a while and ... as a kicker ... have a 1932 transmission in my shop with the "new style" numbers clearly stamped.
