Default Remove running board rubber

What is the easiest way to remove rubber from 41 running boards? Chipping it off is tedious!

this is only a guess, would heating it up make it softer? heat gun on low?

I used a gasket scraper and a small hammer with good results. The rubber came off in mostly large chunks. An air chisel might be overkill but may work on stubborn areas being careful not to mar or gouge the metal surfaces. The corners and edges are a little tougher and take patience. I didn't try heating thinking the stuff is vulcanized to the metal and it might make it more difficult.

The heat idea is good but you need more than a heat gun. Propane torch with a spreader. Then use the gasket scrapper/paint scrapper.

Direct application of dry ice may work. There are some utube videos where they used this for undercoat removal.

I used one of those razor type scrapers that I got at Lowes in the flooring department. They are actually made to make a quick job of removing old floor tile. Didn't take long.

The Victor torch worked wonders. I just heated the underside and the stuff almost fell off.

Please do yourself a big favor and buy a new set of complete running boards from Bob Drake. They are excellent and worth the price. On occasion, he does have a sale; it is worth it, trust me.

don't think anyone makes '41 boards. Be careful, they're scarce as hens teeth!

Not sure if Hunley Acuff (sp?) Is still in business, or if someone has taken that business over from him, but he/they may be able to mold new rubber on cleaned up boards for you..

Back in the eighties when I did mine, I spent an entire weekend stripping off the old running board rubber with a hammer and wood chisel. There are some good suggestions posted above for quicker, easier removal methods.

I use an oxy acetylene torch to heat the rubber and then scrape it off (whilst hot) with a paint scraper. It is a quick and efficient way of getting the rubber off. Best to do it outside with an extinguisher close by, and make sure the wind is not blowing the smoke into your neighbours house.

The only way to remove quickly is a torch on the backside and a scraper. Comes off so easy you will want to do more for your friends!!!!
