Ethanol Free 100LL

How will Model A, Model T, and Early V8s run on ethanol free 100LL Avgas? Been looking for ethanol free gas and the only station in range is a nearby airport with 100LL.

I have heard from a pilot that AV gas is so refined, it will last years and years without causing gum, sludge or problems. The only problem is that it is expensive, but it maybe worth it. I bought 4 gallons about 1 year ago and it cost just over $4 a gallon.

Avgas has a different carbon chain than auto gas. It really doesn't break down and lasts for years.
It is very expensive, nothing in aviation is cheap, but the Model A will run just fine on it.





Many stations now sell non-ethanol, its the high octane and the pump usually says so. But, I guess every state is different. I'm surprised NYS does it, so, I would think every state would do it, but, apparently not.
Marinas also have it.

Be careful,how you go about acquiring it. It is illegal for an FBO to sell AV gas for any other purpose than for an aircraft. It has to be done so that EPA does not know about it. Another way to get ethanol free gas is to purchase from a marina. Boat engines sit idle for long periods at times and most marinas sell ethanol free gas.

But your A will run fine with Avgas. Tried it several times, great stuff!

A local airport told me that they could sell gas to folks for off-road use.You just can't fill your car up there.If it is for road use then road tax has to be paid on it.Airports just don't do that.This airport had gotten caught and warned but you can go in with a 5 gallon can and tell them you want it for your weedwacker.According to them it is a tax thing.I just find it a waste of money to use it in an A.When the A was built octane ran around 67,so the cheapo 87 octane of today should be like feeding it super high test.

Sunoco Racing Fuel...... 110 Octane leaded........ kinda pricy around $10 per gallon but at 110 Octane you can 'cut' it with cheapo gas. Just another option.

I run Sunoco Rec 90. Lucky for me it is only a block from where I live.

Safewiz,,, you are one lucky guy. In my opinion Sunoco was/is the best darn gasoline you can buy. They left our area (western Illinois) probably 30 years or so ago.

In the 60's -early 70's EVERYBODY around here that had a performance car ran Sunoco 260. Highest pump Octane gas you could buy it was 100 Octane if I recall. The Sunoco Custom Blend pumps, had seven different grades of gasoline to choose from. I ran 190 in our Model A ran great.

(Worked at our local Sunoco while going to school so I am probably a bit biased, but they DID have top notch gasoline and motor oil) We also gave out S&H Green stamps but that's another story.

You can make your own ethanol free gas. Buy a white 5 gallon or bigger container or they are called carboys. Make sure it has a opening on top to fill and a spigot near the bottom. Add 5 gallons of ethanol gas and about 1 quart of water. Shake up and the alcohol and water will bond. Let sit for awhile and the alcohol and water mixture will sink to the bottom. Open the spigot and drain out the bad stuff. All you will have left is pure gas.

100 LL is not low in lead content and the lead can precipitate out of the fuel air mixture if the combustion temperature is to low.
It is labeled low lead because it is lower in lead content than the old 100 octane that we used to burn in our airplanes. It came about when 80/87 octane was dropped. be aware that you can end up with stuck valves.

This sounds like making first run cuts at the still.

In the 50's and 60's my uncle insisted on using only white gas in his lawn mower, but I never asked him why. I have an old farm household generator from the 40's that says to clean the plug about every 25 hours if you used leaded gas, and only every 100 hours if you use unleaded gas.

I sure have no problem with removing the lead, but it sure sucks to put in corn.

Just for laughs, We were going down I 81 through Va. and I found a little gas station (off brand, whose colors were blue and yellow)Near Staunton, Va. that was selling pure gas. I was low and stopped to fill up. The truck ran better and the mileage went to 25 MPG.

I have a friend that runs av gas in his 40 Willy's drag car. I asked him about putting it in my a shouldn't hurt he said so I ran the tank near empty put a few gallons in it and it really woke it up and ran really well. My friend said if there is junk in the system it may loosen it up but I never had a problem. That was 20 years ago or more would like to do it again.

I only run 90 octane ethanol-free gas in my "A's" and '29 Chevy. Plus with a little dab or two of Marvel Mystery oil. Cars run great with no vapor lock in the summer. There are two places that sell the ethanol-free gas within
a few miles of me: Dade City, FL. The cheapest is $3.35 a gallon last time I bought some.

in the late 60's I lived in Jacksonville, FL. Sunoco 260 was the gas to
run if you had a souped-up car. Mine was a '65 Buick SkyLark GrandSport
with a 401, 2 4-barrels, headers, the works. Ah'..those were the days!
