Default The things you find inside an engine

I guess someone thought it was easier to cut a wrench off than install a cotter.

Not sure what the extra hole in the center main, never seen that one before.

Guess you don't need an oil well or oil grooves to the end.

It wasn't a Ford but a John Deere Model B. The engine had been rebuilt before and I told the owner that the jerk that rebuilt it was a jerk and put it together with a hammer. Cleaning out the oil sump I found the hammer wedge.

My My what a mess. Looks like it has a nick in the cam also. Looks like you get to rebuild it.

I didn't mention this other stuff. You are right, a mess. Engine was rebuilt many years ago and only run about an hour. Along with the crack is the results of flywheel bolts being too long.

Thumbs up Re: The things you find inside an engine

I picked up a 1931 engine that had sat 30 years. When I took it apart for inspection I found Rat poison pellits, Mouse droppings, Mouse nests, Mouse Bones and Skulls. Moving on to the oil pan, At least a gallon of Sludge thick as mud. The oil pump spring rusted in two . But the engine is in great shape now. It took a lot of cleaning.

I have taken a few engines apart that had an extra hole drilled into the rear main bearing cap. Apparently, the extra hole was an attempt to stop oil dripping out.

I have an extra oil drain with a separate drain pipe in the Model B engine running in my 190A. So far, not one drop of oil on the floor.

When I was a teenager back in the '50s, I heard of a local garage that had done an engine rebuild of a flathead V-8. The customer brought the car back complaining of strange noises in the engine. When they removed the intake manifold they found the missing ball peen hammer.

The nick on the camshaft is just a shiny spot. If you saw my later pictures, I am not going to rebuild this one.

I found this on my latest attempt to find a good block. The crank is in fantastic condition, counter weighted & balanced. Block looked good, Babbitt job didn't look all that great on the rods and I found this rear main cap Braised in unusable dip tube. The main caps were all over torqued so much I had to use an 18" cheater bar to break them loose. The center and middle caps had no groves. Rear main has too many. Fortunately the engine had not bee run enough to damage anything. As soon as I acquire another rear cap I'll sent them to Bill Barlow for a proper Babbitt job.

Rebuilding my '31 Pick up's motor, the rod caps were put on backwards with the oil slingers facing the wrong way. The engine had about 30 K miles on it since its last rebuild and no harm was done to it.
