Wow, I would have thought taking the horn rod off and then the nut would have made it a lot easier.....

That is a pretty good way to ruin ( chipping ) a perfectly good steering wheel.

I`m with Jim on this one. if I have a tough one, I use a rear hub knock off and put enough little flat washers inside of it so when you screw it down on the steering shaft it bottoms out before it makes contact with the steering wheel. a couple good whacks and it is off.

Once the horn/light switch rod was out, I drilled & tapped 1/4" holes in the metal and used a regular wheel puller on it. Make sure you protect the threads on the shaft, otherwise you will be up against replacing that.

The steering wheel pullers that the vendors sell didn't work at all. It just bent without budging the steering wheel.

Yeah the power of wedging... good video, as not everyone, esp. the home mechanic has every tool like a professional shop or professional restorer might.

He must have missed showing the removal of the horn rod and the nut that holds it on. If he did not do that I would like to see the "rest of the story". Don/WI

After removing my wheel and putting it back on several times it gets stuck, so being long legged in push up with my knees and with both hands hitting in a up ward, it jumps off and can hit you in the nose :-(

put the nut on a couple turns to save the nose

Try search & read my method, taught to me by "RINGO", an old time Chrysler-Plymouth tech that knew a thousand "off the wall" tricks. Since he taught me his "secret" way to pull steering wheels, I have NEVER had to use a puller or a knocker!!!!! (If I have to LABORIOUSLY tipe the WHOLE thing again, it'll cost you a QUARTER, right now, I gotta' go P**)

Here's Bill's method that he posted Sept 2011:

Screw nut partly on, sit with your feet planted on floor, grasp steering wheel at both sides, with elbows STRAIGHT, lean your upper body back STRAIGHT, ROCK YOUR UPPER BODY SIDE TO SIDE WITHOUT BENDING YOUR ELBOWS.The secret is that one arm pulls up on the wheel, while the other pushes down at the SAME time, and this will cause the taper to "POP" loose. I haven't had to use a puller since the '50's after learning this from an old pro!!

Be sure to have the nut partly on or you will surely get a nose bleed when it pops loose.

On an old Toyota, I TIGHTENED the steering nut down REAL TIGHT, to try to "FIX" a funky horn contact, didn't work!!--------"I'll bet this will be a bugger to get off now--------NOPE! With this method, it popped right off.
When I first posted this, got a P.M. from a guy that had given up on getting his old Datsun steering wheel off-------"Bill, it work like a charm."

great advice on this forum, many thanks for all the suggestions to remove a very stuck (30-31 ) wheel with column in the car. Tried them all including puller, liquid wrench, etc. I had an old home made puller from 1/4" plate which would bend when pressure applied. Angle iron plates perhaps would be stronger. My wheel came off after repeated short blows with a small rubber hammer on each spoke in opposite rotation as close to the hub as possible. This took about 10-15 minutes with no damage to the wheel and may have achieved the same rocking motion as suggested by others. This also avoided damaging shaft threads, etc. Not sure this method is the best but was a last resort in my situation.
