Default 1951 shoebox a chevrolet guys 1st Ford

Hi

my first ford has been fun learned a bunch.

this is just going to be a fun car to take the kids and wife out in.

but

before i buy all the parts i just want to make sure what i am doing will work.

i have a 51 that i am putting a freshly rebuilt 73 302 with a c4 with a shift kit and a 2200 stall converter.

the 302 is now a 306 it should be at 9:1 now

stock heads with valve spring and cleaned up ports (gasket matched & casting cleaned up.)

600 cfm holley the speedway dual plane intake.

i was thinking of running the comp cams

http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...?csid=800&sb=2

do this its to much cam? if so what cam would you run

will my hydraulic brakes work ok?

thank you

Head on over to the HAMB (jalopyjournal.com) and you'll get some answers. Most here on Fordbarn with a '51 Ford will be running a flathead or keeping their hood closed

You really need to ask these questions @ COMP TECH.

They will need to know how the engine is built, stall, rear end ratio and tire size along with how you want to use the car..

On the surface, that looks close. But K is right. Call them and ask with all the information available. Cam grinders want you to be happy, and they know more than the rest of us.

Comp Cams should be able to tell you how much manifold vacuum to expect, so you have an idea how well power brakes will work.

That cam probably likes a CR of 9.5 or 10:1 and you probably need a better valve spring than stock. Ask Comp Cams, they are pretty helpful. I have a similar grind in my car, the cam definitely likes a lot of rear end gear.

I have a 302 built similar. The cam is a Comp. roller with similar specs. I also used all Comp. components. Roller lifters, pushrods, roller rockers and beehive springs. It's hyd. and revs to the moon! It's measured 9.8/1 compression. Idles good at about 800 RPM and power brakes work fine. Not bad to drive on the street. Also run 87 octane gas with no problem.

https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...rself-here.18/ There is a very large and active Shoebox Ford Social Group you should join after signing in. Back to your build, your 1973 heads are some of the worst flowing heads for the SBF period. That choice of cam with those heads would be a total waste and because of the lift and the fact that those heads in stock form do not have adjustable rocker arms you will need new pushrods, valve springs and retainers and the cost of all of that on the '73 heads would be a total waste of money. Bottom line is you need some decent heads period. https://www.hotrod.com/articles/ccrp...ads-that-work/ Before you spend any money on parts check out the Tech here: www.sbftech.com you can learn a lot.

You should also track down this book you can preview it by clicking on the sections in blue. http://www.mre-books.com/interchange/index.html I take it this is the intake you have in mind ? https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speed...ld,394454.html "Note it is on back order" This intake is based on the older Weiand Stealth intake you can tell by the front and rear water passages which is a good thing, the newer replacement
castings have gone the cheap route and eliminated the rear passages like the newer Weiand and Edelbrock. This is the older and better version: https://www.ebay.com/itm/WEIAND-8011...4AAOSw8sZdONyE Or go this route if you are on a budget ? https://www.ebay.com/itm/fits-Ford-S...ry!85037!US!-1

Big improvement over the stock heads. Still too much Cam for a driver. This would be a better match to your parts also read the warranty and quality difference.https://www.summitracing.com/parts/h...view/make/ford

My cam is comp. no. FS 281RF-HR10. Duration @.050 is 220, .320 lobe lift and 110 lobe separation. This is for in. and ex. Idles a little rough but smooths out real nice above idle. I do have a high stall converter, tricked out C-4 and 3:73 gears. Not hard to drive at all. It's an '88 Ford Ranger.
