Noticed a tink tink tink sound coming from my 39 Pickup
Hey guys, noticed a tink tink tink sound coming from my 39 pickup any ideas? Having trouble recreating the sound in my garage. Happens after warm up and at higher speeds tends to stop when I slow down and come to a stop.

Hopefully you will be able to post the "tink, tink, tink" sound so keep "tinkering" with your computer to make it happen. I also have a "tink, tink" sound on my 8BA that comes and goes. Can't pinpoint the location.

the fuel pump mount has a 5/8" dia or so tube inserted into the bottom of it...this fits down inside the baffle tube. if this tube falls outta the f/p base, it 'bounces' around on the f/p pushrod and goes tink tink tink.

Re: Noticed a tink tink tink sound coming from my 39 Pickup
I had an intermittent light tink tink sound on my 32 sedan. It turned out the bendix on the starter was damaged. The part with the teeth has a piece attached to it. This piece had become detatched. I replaced it and the noise was fixed. I showed it in one of my videos.
At least it is a relatively easy thing to check. Mart. |

Mike: Me "tinks" road noise in the video makes the "tink" sound inaudible.

Re: Noticed a tink tink tink sound coming from my 39 Pickup
dose the noise happen when you step on the brake? My 36 pickup did that for a long time.
I finely figured it was the bendex, there are 2 small springs that hold the gear in place, so it dose not move forward into the fly wheal. the springs where gone, the gear sliding forward was the noise

Long shot that the clutch fingers are touching throwout bearing at higher rpms. Try putting your foot on the clutch when it happens to see if that affects the sound.

My broken bendix problem was the same as Brendan's. I looked at my spare starters and one of those was also broken so it would seem the problem is common.

Re: Noticed a tink tink tink sound coming from my 39 Pickup
Mart,
Thank you for the video. That sound seems to be identical to what I am hearing on my pickup. I am currently a little down and out with shingles. As soon as I feel up to it I am going to get under there and pull the starter off and check it out. I will let you know what I find. Thank you very much for the video. Mike |

Brendan and Mart, I was able to get under the truck today and take the starter off. Looks like Brendan was right the spring and plunger thing is gone. I will look into getting it repaired and put back in. Thank you both and thank you to everyone else for the ideas! Appreciate it!

Re: Noticed a tink tink tink sound coming from my 39 Pickup
Good spot Mike. Glad you found it. For those that don't know, the spring loaded plunger sits behind the chamfer (red arrow) when the starter is stationary and disengaged. This stops the bendix gear floating forward and touching the moving ring gear.
On my starter the complete ring came apart from the pinion in the area indicated (green arrow). This resulted in the same problem. Mart. |

Be thankful it wasn't going tinkle, tinkle. That would've really pissed you off.
