Default Australian 1934 Ford Coupe Ute plus Video

This particular 1934 Ford Coupe Utility would have to be the best example of the breed in Australia bar none. This is what the genuine 1934 Ford Coupe Ute looks like. The original 1934 Coupe Ute was designed by Lew Bandt and was an immediate success generating good sales for Ford Motor Company in Australia. However, in recent times, much controversy and confusion has been caused when Ford Motor Company of Australia started out with a 1933 Ford Sedan as the basis to create a Ute in the 80's to give to their retiring Designer Lew Bandt. The recreation is nothing like the original, which is a great pity.
The above photo of a genuine 1934 Ford Coupe Ute was taken at Yass during the documentary shoot "Aussie Inventions that changed the world" in 2017. If you want to see more of this Ute, the owners brother shot a video which is very well done. Check it out.

They are few and far between these days. Only until fairly recently, collectors used Utes as Parts Cars with little respect for Utes. These days, they are highly sought after. Thanks for Posting.

I find it a little disappointing that, in the video clip, the commentator says that it has been restored. It's a hot rod, not a restored car so be honest and call it that. From what I can see the only part that remains from the original vehicle is some of the body panels etc.

Are there actually any/many 'restored' [original specs] '34 Cpe Utes or roadster Utes ['33-'34] in Australia?
All I have seen pics are hot rods like this one except for one in a museum, maybe Sth Aust. Cheers

In defense of the owner of the great red 1934 Ford Coupe Ute, sure, it has been modified, however, you should have seen how this Ute looked when it was first rescued from outside storage on a property, with most of the mechanical parts missing. The finished product, even if it has late model running gear is a credit to the builder and owner. The original body has been restored and each panel is super straight. It also has the original headlights, bumper, horns etc. so it is restored on the outside. Also, it is a driver and sees lot of use going to shows and promotions. Give credit where credit is due. It is one sharp looking Ute.

I agree with you Mercman. I appreciate the workmanship in well built cars, whether restored or modified. It's very impressive.

For the purists, here are pictures of a restored 1934 Ford Well Type Coupe Ute. These Well Type Utes were very popular with builders etc as they could carry long loads on the added sides. The Well Type Ute was more practical, but not as good looking as the Straight Side models. The Well Type models were known as Type 304. This beauty is all original. Enjoy.

Body Number 40LD1262 January 1935. Production finished at end of March 1935. Utility ex the Ice Works on Kangaroo Island, SA. This very Utility won a REDeX Reliability Trial on the island in 1955. Body Number and chassis numbers had to be identified by SA Police Forensic examination. Indicative of what damage salt and ice water can do to a work vehicle.

Mike Wolfe (from "American Pickers") would be raving about the fact that it had "original paint". Many people have started with a lot worse. The fact remains that is not a restoration, but a "Street Rod" (not that that takes anything away from it).

Here is a picture of another modified 1934 Ford Coupe Ute - Body Number 40LD1050. This one runs a 318 Chrysler and 4 speed trans. The rear section on this Ute has been shortened.

Here is a picture of another 1934 Ford Coupe Ute. While the mechanicals have been changed, the body is original, except for the rear cover and Tail Lights. This one has Body Number 40LD1290. With a high number like this means that less than 100 more Utes, both Roadster Utes and Coupe Utes were built. Please note that these Utes, regardless of whether they were Roadster Utes or Coupe Utes received the next number in sequence. This numbering started with the 1933 Ford Roadster Utes started with the 1933 Ford Utes, as the Coupe Ute was not introduced until the 1934 model.
