How rare are 1934 Ford Coupe Utes? To answer that question, read the following. Allocated Body Numbers included ALL Roadster Utilities + Coupe Utilities for Model 40 vehicles, 1933 and 1934 Fords. All up, 528 Coupe Utilities (145 Type 304 Well-type and 383 Type 302 Straightside Models.) A further 862 Roadster Utilities were produced. All up TOTAL of 1390 units.
Remember that this total is for ALL 1933 and 1934 Ford Utes, so you can see that the Coupe Utes are extremely rare, and that is why people are trying to rescue the remains of any that they come across. Only 528 Coupe Utes were manufactured here.

Each to their own but this is much more me !

I agree !! This model would be my ultimate early V8. Has the style & elegance of the '33 '34 Ford front end with the unique but supremely practical utility tray. They look too good to be used as a commercial. A belated Ford Australia success. Cheers.

These 1934 Ford Coupe Utes are so thin on the ground these days, that the new owner jumped at the chance to drag the bones of this one home. Luckily, he is a very accomplished panel beater, so hopefully, this one will see the light of day again. It is Body Number 40LD470. Not many survive, so you have to take what you get, even if it does look like this.

When I got to the butchered undercarrage, I just cut the video off. That would have been a twice as nice car if it was truly restored.

Back in 2017 at the ASRF Street Rod Nationals held at Bendigo, there were four of these rare 1934 Ford Coupe Utes in attendance. They were parked together for a photo shoot.

Here's another that I came across only a couple of days ago. It closely resembles the one just above. DD

That "Ute" DD is the cobbled up one that Ford did for Ford Designer Lou Bandt as a retirement present. They couldn't locate a genuine Ute, but found a 1933 Ford Sedan, and removed the back portion and mated it up to the B pillar. From the B pillar back, they had to cobble up a bed, the best as they could. Unfortunately, returning home from an interview, Lou was involved in an accident that claimed his life. His widow donated the damaged cut-down 33 sedan to Ford requesting them to repair the Ute in Lou's honor. Ford Australia asked the local Early Ford V8 Club for assistance and they replaced the 33 grille and fenders with 34 items, and that is how the car looks today - totally different to the original 1934 Ford Coupe Ute. Unfortunately, Ford Australia continue to promote this car in all their advertisements, as the genuine article. It has also been illustrated on an Australian stamp and a coin. It is just a pity that a genuine one had not been located, as it would have saved a lot of confusion some 85 years after the fact. The molding on the doors on a Sedan are totally different to the molding on the Coupe and Coupe Utes. A scale model has also been produced of this poor substitute for a genuine 1934 Ford Coupe Ute.

For comparison, check out the profiles of the original unrestored genuine 1934 Ford Coupe Ute with the profile of this recreated one made from a 1933 Ford Sedan. Notice the shape of the rear side windows? The back of the cab on the recreation is almost vertical, but it slants on the original. Compare the different widths of the molding on the doors. The Taillights on the originals were never on steams like the other passenger cars, but only had a single light on the right hand side mounted on a bracket. The cargo area is also smaller on this recreation. The front half of the recreation is fine, it is just the back half that is totally wrong.

Here is a Ford Factory photo of a 1934 Ford Coupe Ute when it was brand new. Notice how different the rear roof line and tray area is from the "recreated" one that Ford Australia is promoting.

Advertisement that appeared in the local Newspapers for the new 1934 Ford Coupe Ute. Notice that it is totally different to the recreated Ute that Ford Australia did recently as a retirement present to Lou Bandt. This is how they should look.

For those that want to learn more about Australian Ute, this great book "The Good Old Aussie Ute" is available from the Publishers, Graffiti Publications Pty Ltd. PO Box 232, Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia, 3450. It is a very good book and full of period photos of Utes, as well as current photos of Utes. Their email address is :- [email protected]
