Waterpump rebuilt - Leakless of not?

Waterpump is leaking pretty badly, got new packing but when removing the old packing dug out what looked like teflon tape (used by previous owner?), shaft is scored pretty bad, and haven't had any luck getting the waterpump to stop leaking with the new packing, the casting is good, decided to rebuild, I see two rebuild kits, one is leakless, one is not, what is the general consensus of going with the leakless?


Radiator has a tag, McCord Corporation, Detroit Model # F5001, not sure if it is real or added onto the radiator...

Recently bought a leakless from Eckler's. Decided to replace original fan with aluminum one at same time. Fan housing did not fit onto the pump. Too tight. Old fan fit. New one did not. Like the pump. Put the old fan back on.

Repacked the old pump a number of times before buying the leakless. Good for awhile, but then leaked. Got tired of cleaning up spary. Hoping the leakless holds up.

Hello the aluminum fan always seems to need the water pump cut for clearance due to thickness of the pulley area on the repro blade, mine had instructions on how to mount it, the leekless pump works well.

If you don't want to rebuild it, this was recommended to me http://leaklessapumps.com/. I did purchase one and an aluminum fan from Snyders. I didn't get the heavy duty pump as mine has a generator on it and not an alternater. The fan fit perfect with no rubbing. The fellow does nice work on them.

I see no problem with doing your own rebuild as you can only gain knowledge doing so.

2 years ago I bought a new leakless and a 2 blade fan from Snyders and they are both great. Great fit.

After you rebuild the pump, bolt it on without the gasket to make sure the shaft is not rubbing on the thrust casting in the head. I had one that I thought was good to go but the shaft was rubbing. Had to grind the end of the shaft a little to fit.

The radiator is an aftermarket replacement. They as far as I know are still making radiators.

My leakless pump started leaking after about 5,000 miles of use. I guess that isn't too bad, and is probably more mileage than a pump with packing before you'd have to deal with a leak. But when it started leaking there was no way to stop it (you can't add packing) short of replacing/rebuilding it. I like the idea of being able to do a roadside fix by just adding a spit ring of packing to get you on your way again, rather than to have to replace the whole pump.

30 years on regular pump made out of used parts, stock--- got the used parts removed to make a leak less pump, that pump has been changed 2 more times since then---- mine leaked a little and had the packing tightened several times in the first year, then no adjustments for 10 years, still not leaking but there's some front- back movement now, the pump before had a stainless shaft that didn't last long, the front bearings wore the shaft
