Default Langhorne Sportsman Race circa 1951

I saw this over on the H.A.M.B. and could not resist bringing it over here to share. It's a 100 lap National Open Sportsman race with over a hundred cars starting the race on the one mile track at Langhorne. Lot's of action.

Hey Denny, I was still riding my bike in '51
The '40 my son bought from Hoidal sure looks like some of those tho.
My '40 was channeled to sit quite a bit lower than most of those did.
Man, when ya think of all the nice old coupes that were sacrificed back
in the day, it makes one cringe.

Thanks so very much for that excellent movie!!! As a lifetime reader of WW2, I watch something like this and can't help but wonder what those guys were doing 6-10 years prior. I can picture a former P38 pilot and a waist gunner from a B17 battling it out on the track. All of this repaired in the pits by a guy who cut his teeth wrenching on tanks in horrendous heat or cold. Today we look at this and see how dangerous racing was back then, but that waist gunner now works in the back room at a radiator shop and for 38 laps he is alive again.

GB, I think you hit the nail on the head. A lot of those guys had to be ex-GI's. The jalopy racing was a way to re-create some excitement in their lives without having to worry about someone shooting at them! Thanks for bringing that up.

Not to hi-jack this post but if you like the stock-car racing I have a shot of my good friend Bill's from a while back. Helped him build the powerplant!

I did all the machine work on his unit some 20 years ago, this is the one we fabricated a "center-main-girdle" to pull the pan rails together in the center!

Car ran the "nostalgia" shows here in the Northeast, would run all night long at 5000+, never skipped a beat and was still running fine when Bill sold it years later!

Below, 2 photos, one of the ride and the other for the "pattern" (which I still have here) for the #2 main girdle!

Thanks Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Am still keeping my posts a bit short due to very recent health issues!

Very cool! What's with the big hubs on the front of these cars. They look like full floating rear axles from a 3/4 or one ton pickup.

They are some type of heavy hub. Takes the weight on the right front cause they’re always turning left. I’m sure somebody will give a more specific answer.......Mark

I love the old car races, just unfortunate some of them don't have the sound track as well. Naturally I'm always looking to see a Mercury but its a rare thing to see a 52 Merc in one of them. I did spot one in this 1952 Motor City race.
