Default 3rd member fill hole

If the rear end is filled to the hole, will it be too much. Book has 1 1/2 pints.

I have not measured how much I put in, I just fill it to the bottom of the hole. With it at that level, I can check it and be sure it has oil. If it is below the hole and can't be reached, who knows how low it is?
This has been the standard for as long as I have worked on cars (Long time).

You can stick your pinky in the hole to feel the oil level below the fill hole.

I squeezed almost a quart in and its still below the hole. Plus, I have a drip I didn't have before. I thought I might have over filled it.

A lot of late model pickups specify that the oil level in the rear end be below the fill hole, some as much as 1 1/4 "! You need to make a dipstick to check oil level, can't get a finger in that far. Why they didn't just put the fill hole at the proper level is beyond me!
So check the shop manual when servicing your differential.

it can be tricky to figure out if your pinky is in the oil or getting oily from the plug threads...I usually fill till it flows out and let it flow out till its virtually stopped then put the plug in. Fill the last little bit slowly so it has time to ooze into all the crevices.

be aware if your trans leaks it can "overfil" the rearend.

When I first checked Minervas' rear end, it was WAY overfilled, trans was OK.
HOW did someone do that????
When I first checked Vermins' stuff, the trans & diff contained ONLY 1/8 cup, in each???? Did someone DIE while waitin' for the PONY EXPRESS???

When the previous owner of my '30 CCPU delivered it, he had had it serviced by a modern Ford dealership in AZ. I won't go any further to identify the dealer but the rear end was bone dry. I'm sure they didn't have the tool to undo the plug - the Mitchell O/D was also very low and it has the same plug. I have flushed the rear end till the sparkly bits just about disappeared from the flush, filled with my usual oil and it has been OK since. I intend replacing the bearings at least as soon as I can but it does show how tough these things are. I think having the oil level a little high or low won't be the end of the world.

PS, I could type a page listing the other stupid things that modern dealer did.

Fill it to the hole...different books and manuals state different amounts...
If you have a leak see where it is coming from as at that level it should be dry

Either the car was setting on a real steep incline facing down, or more likely the tranny and driveline seals let the tranny oil drain down into the rear end.

If the oil level is below the bottom of the hole, I just use a bent wire to find the level.
I was taught that the oil level can be a long way down and there's still enough in there to get thrown around by the ring gear to lube everything.

How low can you safely go? I don't know, but lost two rear ends because they were bone dry when I bought the vehicles. The first thing I do when I buy a vehicle is change the fluids and check the brakes, but by the time I drove these two home, the damage was done.

Be safe and keep clean fluid up to the fill hole.
