Thanks Dusty, that's an interesting way to power the wheels. When I was very young I used to think these old steamers didn't have any electricity. It was some time later when I learned about the steam turbine driven generator, as seen in front of the smoke stack.

Hey, That looks like the Durbin Rocket. Me and a couple of my friends were there in Sept. We rode the Cass railroad all the way up and back. Cass is near Durbin and uses Shay locomotives. We love steam trains and also drive A models and pick string instruments. It don't get much better.

Ya, no big drivers on that baby, makes you think of a Shay. First time I saw a Shay I did not know what the heck I was looking at and my eyes popped. Have wanted to make it to Cass for yrs but maybe someday. Gotta look around closer to home, maybe Colorado has some steam someplace. Ya just can't beat steam. And maximum torque at 0 RPMs !!!

There are two narrow gage steam trains in Colorado/New Mexico. The Cumbres Toltec runs out of Chama, NM, and the Durango&Silverton is in Durango,CO. Both run pretty much year round or until the snow gets too deep for their plows.
I've ridden both and either one is a "bucket list" experience.

This is my Grandfather about 1940 on the Suncook Valley Rail Road. It was an independent short line, connected to the B&M.

- If anyone in Northern California is into old steam trains, Eureka, Calif has quite a lot of working stock from their logging trains - 1890-1940. Everything from "Speeders" to Shays, to full sized Steam Engines and Passenger Cars from the 1920-40 period. Even an historic 'Round House' - all the stock is either working or under restoration. Stop by on the weekends for their 'Speeder Rides', 'Steam-up", Museum Tours, etc.

North Freedom, Wisconsin has a railroad museum worth visiting. I heard Paul Harvey mention it years ago, so I made it a point to stop there on my way to Michigan.
They had some steam engines in the middle of a restoration. It's worth the side trip if you are in Wisconsin.

Saw a neat movie on TCM the other day. Silver Streak (1934). NOT the Gene Wilder version.

The star of the show was the Pioneer Zephyr from the CB&Q (Burlington Route) railroad. Story line is, the old timers on the railroad Board of Directors want to stay with steam engines, an up and coming young mechanical engineer is trying to convince them that diesel engines are the future.

There is a medical emergency at the Boulder (Hoover) Dam (you see the dam under construction actual footage) and they have to rush an iron lung from Chicago to the dam in an un-heard of time to save the life of the Railroad President's son.

LOTS of neat outside shots, period cars etc. Pretty good flick if you like old cars and old trains from the early '30's a good one to own!! The race with a CB&Q steam locomotive powered train is cool!

The Nevada Northern Railway

You can actually be an engineer and drive a steam train here.

One of their members owns a 1929 Ford Model AA Railway Express Truck that is used by the museum on occasion.

We rode the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams AZ. to the Canyon. Bandits "robbed" the train on the way back!!

Williams is on Ol' Route 66 also. Lotsa fun.

There is a good railroad museum in Chattanooga TN. They run excursions to different places at different times of the year.
