Default 59 a Crankshaft front seal

If fitting the new type seal and sleeve to crankshaft is it necessary to then shorten up the back end of the double pulley to allow for the fitting of seal and sleeve?
Thanks,
Phil NZ

Phil, I used one on my 59 and did not have to make any adjustments to the pulleys.

Phil what sleeve are you going to use. 59AB doesn’t use a sleeve. 8BA use a sleeve. Not really sure what sleeve your going to use.

Same with me. I used a stainless very thin sleeve on the crank for the new seal to run on....sorry can't remember the name of the sleeve, but it wasn't cheap!!

You'll be happy with the one piece seal!!

Speedy sleeve goes on pulley not crankshaft as Phil stated

what year engine are you putting it on? I shortened a 40 pully to put on an 8ba so I could mount the crankshaft fan

Ok just checked a couple of measurements.
The supplied bush that seal runs on is 1.08" long.
Length from back edge of pulley to end of bush is 1.0" in length.
Dont have the C/shaft here to cross check.
But would think perhaps the pulley would need to have the 1" removed off the back to accomodate the length of supplied bush to ensure pulley alignment with w/pumps and Genr.
Or just stick with the rope seal ! and forget about modification.

Sounds like you're using the late 49-53 sleeve with it . . . is it one that is smooth (for the new seal). If so, then you'd need to trim the back of the 59x pulley to account for the sleeve length. What I can't say is if they made it the correct length. If it was me, I'd get a late 49-53 pulley that used the same type of slip-on sleeve and determine the length from the front of the pulley (where the big washer hits it) - to the back where it would hit the sleeve - to determine the length you need.

Yep thats correct its the smooth outter one. And as stated if using it there is a need to trim back the 59A pulley to ensure combined overall length remains the same.

Trying to cut off an early 8BA and some of the 59AB pulleys is not a perfect solution since diameter a bit into the bore is bigger so the pulley doesn´t center perfectly after cutting.
I prefer speedy sleeves for that reason.

If the sealing surface is in good shape, the one piece seal will work just fine on the 59 pulley. I've done it many times with no leakage problems. The small grooves are not a problem.

Just checked and the solution is to just use the seal and this will fit over the rear sleeve end of the pullley with the small grooves in it and overall length will be correct. Present double pulley is in good order as is sealing surface.
Could even double up on front seal and also use the "rope seal"

Hi Phil, if you have the same pulley in the picture below (believe it is from a 59A?) those "spirals" should really be eliminated to use the 1-pc neoprene front seal. Have never tried to run the 1-pc neoprene with ANY "spirals" on the sleeves at all.

I imagine it could be machined off and then use the non-spiraled sleeve with the 1-pc seal?? Never done it this way but it does make sense?

If you do happen to use the neoprene seal you should remove it from it's rubber carrier and get some silicone sealer behind it. Lessens the chance of any leak.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Here's a few shots of the parts including the 1-pc seals, the correct sleeves (non-spiraled and spiraled) and the crank pulley from the 59A!

Have used the Speedy Sleeves to cover the spirals on the pulley, Gary references above. Have done this twice successfully, once on the 59AB in my '39 and then again on the double pulley on the 59AB in my '47.

No leaks after the "operation" in both cases.....might just have been lucky.

If the rope seal works with the spirals, why wouldn't the neoprene?

Not sure, but sealing surface on the neoprene is the lip....narrow. Rope seal has much more sealing surface on the pulley and is compressed??
