59 a Crankshaft front seal
If fitting the new type seal and sleeve to crankshaft is it necessary to then shorten up the back end of the double pulley to allow for the fitting of seal and sleeve?
Thanks, Phil NZ |

Re: 59 a Crankshaft front seal
Phil, I used one on my 59 and did not have to make any adjustments to the pulleys.

Phil what sleeve are you going to use. 59AB doesn’t use a sleeve. 8BA use a sleeve. Not really sure what sleeve your going to use.

Re: 59 a Crankshaft front seal
what year engine are you putting it on? I shortened a 40 pully to put on an 8ba so I could mount the crankshaft fan

Re: 59 a Crankshaft front seal
Ok just checked a couple of measurements.
The supplied bush that seal runs on is 1.08" long. Length from back edge of pulley to end of bush is 1.0" in length. Dont have the C/shaft here to cross check. But would think perhaps the pulley would need to have the 1" removed off the back to accomodate the length of supplied bush to ensure pulley alignment with w/pumps and Genr. Or just stick with the rope seal ! and forget about modification. Phil NZ |

Re: 59 a Crankshaft front seal
Sounds like you're using the late 49-53 sleeve with it . . . is it one that is smooth (for the new seal). If so, then you'd need to trim the back of the 59x pulley to account for the sleeve length. What I can't say is if they made it the correct length. If it was me, I'd get a late 49-53 pulley that used the same type of slip-on sleeve and determine the length from the front of the pulley (where the big washer hits it) - to the back where it would hit the sleeve - to determine the length you need.

Re: 59 a Crankshaft front seal
Trying to cut off an early 8BA and some of the 59AB pulleys is not a perfect solution since diameter a bit into the bore is bigger so the pulley doesn´t center perfectly after cutting.
I prefer speedy sleeves for that reason. |

Re: 59 a Crankshaft front seal
If the sealing surface is in good shape, the one piece seal will work just fine on the 59 pulley. I've done it many times with no leakage problems. The small grooves are not a problem.

I imagine it could be machined off and then use the non-spiraled sleeve with the 1-pc seal?? Never done it this way but it does make sense? If you do happen to use the neoprene seal you should remove it from it's rubber carrier and get some silicone sealer behind it. Lessens the chance of any leak. Thanks, Gary in N.Y. P.S. Here's a few shots of the parts including the 1-pc seals, the correct sleeves (non-spiraled and spiraled) and the crank pulley from the 59A!

Re: 59 a Crankshaft front seal
If the rope seal works with the spirals, why wouldn't the neoprene?
