Default Timing question

I put in a new distributor and gear assy and timed my A but I have noticed on cold days or if battery is a little low as I try to start it will fire and try to kick motor back even if I am at full retard. I know this can damage starter. Would this mean that I am a little to far advanced on my timing?

Yes. I'd go through the timing procedure again.

I agree with Lindy. Your dist position should look like this after it is timed.

I wouldn't go through the whole procedure, you've done it about right you're only a smidgin advanced , fuel and ambient temps vary etc, just take the top off the dissy and slacken the cam, just turn it 1 2 notches clockwise to retard it everso slightly, re tighten and see what that's like over the next few days starting and driving.

Which way? To fine tune the timing, take off the round cover and crank just a bit to see which way it turns. Then move the cam opposite of the rotation, it will open the points later relative to piston travel. Go same direction as rotation to advance. Don't need to be at TDC.

turn cam clockwise to retard, CCW to advance ( or as we say here Anticlockwise to Advance)

Yo' Kickin' Buddy,
With a LOW or QUESTIONABLE Battery, we can't expect them to start, "normally"---That's why I LOVED my 6 Volt Alternator, the battery wuz ALWAYS, ZIPPO-HOT--It started so quick & easy, that some thought I wuz on 12 VOLTS!! On all but the COLDEST days, Minerva would start, with NO CHOKING! And ran GOOD, without even opening the GAV.

If you read in the owners instruction book after timing is set it says to check the results by hand cranking and (set up cap or wire so you can see spark) watching spark while pushing in timing pin--- if spark happens the same time you feel the pin drop in the gear recess
