new or old throw out bearing
have a new throwout bearing federal mogul supposed to be the best available from parts supplier.. question, is it better to use my original bearing made in the U.S.A. which has 18'000 miles on it and still feel O.K. or the mexican made federal mogul one? old one was working fine just put in new motor and clutch.

Re: new or old throw out bearing
There have been no negatives spoken of the Mexican bearings that I'm aware of.
18000 miles on a throwout bearing is nothing, assuming the clutch was properly adjusted. If it was out of adjustment, and dragging the bearing, I would replace it. Otherwise it's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. |

Re: new or old throw out bearing
The old rule is always replace the throw out bearing and pilot beraring. Now with some junk bearings around, I dont know.

Re: new or old throw out bearing
the new bearing I have is federal mogul made in mexico, the bearing from my car with 18,000 miles on it was manufactured in the U.S.A. just wandering before I put it all together if this is a good bearing to use.

A couple years back all the suppliers were selling throw out bearings made by Aetna that generally failed coming out of the box. I don't know where they were made. They may have corrected their quality issues, but I wouldn't use one. Tom Endy |

Re: new or old throw out bearing
I use the original bearing when possible. I soak it in a jar of heavy oil while working on the car. After it's installed it gets new grease through the grease zerk on the collar.
I would have no problem with using the FM-MEX bearing if need be. |

Re: new or old throw out bearing
Do like Tom say's and soak the old one in a jar. Put it away for that "just in case" time. Then its ready to go.

Re: new or old throw out bearing
Throw out bearings, off the carrier, can be lubed with a wheel bearing packer. Shielded ball bearings, and sometimes even "sealed" bearings can be done this way also. Harbor Freight has inexpensive packers for us po' folks! Bill W.

Re: new or old throw out bearing
I'll try repacking with my bearing packer on a new throw out bearing manufactured in germany.Bearing looked great as far as quality but feels dry when I test it by hand. If it works Ill take the federal mogul one off carrier and repack it also. Thanks for the tip.

Re: new or old throw out bearing
Tried to repack with a bearing packer, either I didn't apply enough pressure or wasn't right application, resorted to old fashioned method of packing by hand. Worked really well. Thanks to everyone for great responses.
