Compression Question - Newbie
Hi Guys
I did a compression test on my engine and here are the results: Compression test: 60, 65, 50, 65. Added oil to #3, still 50 Is this something I should be concerned with and if so, what's the fix? Also found out my truck has the front shocks missing is that a hard job? And finally, the speedometer not working appears to be inside the transmission as the cable is good and the head is good. Any input on the fix for that? Again thanks for helping the newbie Scott |

Re: Compression Question - Newbie
I think I would start to be concerned about that compression reading.. Was the engine warm or cold when taken ?? Has this engine been running right along or has it been sitting around for awhile ?? It seems you have a valve starting to leak or hang,, but,, if the engine hasn't been run in awhile I'd run it for awhile and try the test again..

Re: Compression Question - Newbie
Oops, forgot.. Installing shocks shouldn't be hard at all.. The speedo drive can be removed easily and looked at.. Generally the driven gear or drive pin are the problem if the cable isn't cabling..

I just purchased the truck so I've only had it a couple of weeks. The previous owner (who only owned it for seven weeks) had it running but not sure how much he used the truck or how often he drove it. However the owner prior to that told me he owned for five years but did not drive it much the last year he owned it. As for the shocks, I looked at Snyder's and assume I'm looking for the original hydraulic shocks that came with the car? As for the speedometer I had someone look at it and they told me that it appeared to be in the transmission as the cable and gear seemed to be okay. Any input would be appreciated. Scott |

There is nothing in the transmission to do with the speedometer so I would
be looking for a second opinion. Bob |

Re: Compression Question - Newbie
Just thought I'd do a compression test since I just bought the truck. Glad to hear you think I'm okay with it. The truck has been running fine just thought I'd ask. Going to work on putting the front shocks on it and I would really like to get the speedometer fixed.

I've heard that the speedometers are very fragile and you need jewelers tools to work on them? Are there any good sights on their repair or can you give me any advice? Thanks Scott |

Re: Compression Question - Newbie
Have you taken the cable off at the torque tube and checked the gear in the turtle,
just two bolts hold it on. You could also hook a drill to the cable under the truck and see if the speedo works. Bob |

Re: Compression Question - Newbie
some speedo cables have plastic ends and can wear to a round shape and stop working. Worth checking.

Re: Compression Question - Newbie
The speedo in my coupe quit recently & it turned out that the square drive in the "turtle" was worn out.The cable was also hard to turn & had a kink in it which put a straln on the drive causing it to wear out.The solution was to replace the "turtle" with a spare and a new cable assy.

Re: Compression Question - Newbie
Papanick does a great job on the speedos. He fixed mine that was reading about 10mph fast. He adjusted it and it's now within 1-2 mph.

Scott
A suggestion regarding shocks.. I'd recommend good originals or those reproduced by Bill Stipe[ they need to be purchased quickly, he's running out].. The other re-pro's are junk. |
