Default 31 deluxe roadster rear fender panels

Are the rear fender body panels under the rear fenders supposed to be black or body color?

According to the Judging Standards under Paint, Area 14, page 14-2: "Fender wells painted black, lower body color, or trim color are acceptable."
So it's your call.

Mike, I just want to be clear on this.

When you say fender wells, does that include the flat panel against the body?

Yes. The lower body that is exposed under the rear fenders and directly behind the rear wheels. If Ford had used disc wheels, this area would not have been noticeable. Apparently, some customer didn't like body color behind the rear wheels, so Ford simply sprayed black lacquer in the rear wheel wells to keep people happy.

I recall reading somewhere about this years ago. If memory serves, the rear fender wells on the early Model A's were left body color. The body was painted and rear fenders installed at the factory, and that was it. Some customers didn't like body color behind the rear wheels, so dealers started painting that area black in an ad hoc fashion. This would explain why the judging Standards leaves black rear wheel wells optional. Do I have this right?
