1931 - 170B Fordor DeLuxe Sedan

Although not listed has there ever been any interest in a 170B - DeLuxe Fordor Blindback Group / Club OR is there already one in existence already? Don't really see much talked about them BUT from what I can tell the '31 was only built for the first three months.

Anyone out there have any?

I don't think I've ever seen a '31 Blindback. Does it have a slant windshield? Is it a town sedan? Does it have a fold down backseat arm rest? Inquiring minds want to know.

Marty in Ohio By all indications it is an early '31 Blindback. I have read they were only made in Jan, Feb and Mar. It is a Straight windshield and does have a backseat arm rest with the interior light over the back window. I have never heard it called a Town Sedan.

All Town Sedans are three window, not two window like the Blindback.

The 170-B (Deluxe Fordor Sedan 2-Window with stright front window) production started in March 1930 and continued thru March 1931. It was replaced in April 1931 with the 160-C (Deluxe Fordor Sedan 2-Window with Slant Window) which ended USA production in December 1931 however it continued in the foreign markets thru July 1932.

The Grand Total of 1930 170-B: 13710

The Grand Total of 1931 170-B: 1347 (apx.)

The Grand Total of 1931 160-C: 3620 (apx.)

The Grand Total of 1932 160-C: 202

Since Ford combined the Deluxe Sedan priduction (170-B and 160-C) into just one production column in 1931 on the below document, which was represented by "DLUX SEDN",...the production numbers then are as close as we can get them when the transission happened in March/April 1931.

These figures and dates were derived from Ford's 1930, 1931 and 1932 Assembly Record Type documents.

I am currently working on an article about the Evolution of the 2-Window Fordor Sedans and if you have a good photo of a restored to original car of this body type, I sure could use it in the article....Or any other of this body type as that goes as there were seven (7)!

I don't completely understand your statement of "Grand Total".

What I would like to add to this is that according to "The Ford Model A As Henry Built It" on Page 164 it says that: "The straight windshield two window sedan and the three-window sedan were phased out in April of 1931 as the slanting windshield sedans made their appearance".
"Production figures show that 12,854 DeLuxe Sedans were built in 1930 and only 740 in 1931."

So Steve, are you saying that with the research you have done that the 1931 production is more then stated in the George DeAngelis book? Thanks for all the articles and research that you do for our hobby!

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying...DeAngelis did not carry his figures out as they did not include those vehicles that were sent for Foreign production or Canada.

So here is the run-down of the production of the 170-B Deluxe:


March 1930 thru December 1930

Domestic (USA): 12854
Foreign: 856
England: 0
Canada: 0

January 1931 thru March 1931

Domestic (USA): 742
Foreign: 414
England: 0
Canada: 191

This was followed by the 160-C production:

April 1931 thru December 1931

Domestic (USA): 2489
Foreign: 944
England: 0
Canada: 187

January 1932 thru July 1932

Domestic (USA): 0
Foreign: 202
England: 0
Canada: 0

Now...I am not sure if Canada's 170-B Deluxe and 160-C were the same as the USA and Fpreign cars or not body wise.

STEVE, thanks for the explanation on the numbers! I never thought of the cars manufactured in other countries. So you talk about Canadan and foreign. Did the foreign cars have any thing different then the American as the Canadan had the Roberson Screws?

I think the bodies were perty much identical except for those that were RHD bodies...I do not know but great question CC.

Steve, the figure of 378 total production for 1931 of the Deluxe 170B is the same as I have on my figures on Canadian production. They are not listed on the Ford Canada Overseas Shipments records, so maybe only for domestic sale or they were included in Town Sedan figures. Canada did sometimes use US assembled bodies [ complete or in white ?] for low volume types eg. the RHD Cabriolet bodies here in NZ were US Briggs assembled plus I have seen a very late RHD '31 Victoria with a US assembled body, but they were on Canadian chassis with Canadian made engine. This is also stated in Canadian Judging Standards. BTW, Canadian production did not begin & end with only Robertson screws, but just about the whole running chassis was Canadian produced. They did complete body assembly for all the high volume types but could import stampings or body work when required.
