Hey Tom,

Can you quick throw some input on the questions i had above? I have a similar problem here but don't think its the rear end...

1. If you had noise in the rear end like peter, is it common to hear it near the tranny?
2. If it was the rear end wouldn't you hear it in every gear and not just third?

Peter, sorry to keep having input.. trying to kill 2 birds with 1 stone perhaps?

I don't know which Tom you want, as I know Tom Endy has done a lot more rear end repairs than I have. I would say the noise can travel and fool you as to the source.

If the trouble was in the rear end, yes, I'd think you would hear it in all 3 forward gears. Is the noise there only due to a third gear problem, or is the noise relate to car speed and only comes with the higher speed while in third gear?

You may not here the noise in all gears,
We hade a pinion bearing fail and it only made the noise in top gear,
In the other gears maybe the speed wasn,t high enough,
Sure sent us looking in the wrong directions for a while,until we took the floor boards out and drove it ,THEN we could hear it in 2nd as well as top.

IT seems to only happen when in 3rd but you might be right about not getting up to speed. And as soon as the clutch goes in the sounds goes away just like what peter said..

I guess the bottom line following all the input: Can I get away with running it as is and put up with the noise temporarly, or will the give out on me altogether?

Hard to say how long it will go, but if it's loose pinion bearing, then any driving will be doing a lot of damage to the ring and pinion. Oh well, that's a good excuse to install the 3.27 ratio.

A weak point is the pinion bearings. If a bearing has failed the gears may still be ok. Putting torque on it in that state could take out a good set of gears.

Gotcha. I don't know if I'm ready to explore the inner workings of the axle. Too bad it's not as straight forward as everything else. But that's what the hobby is all about, exploring the unknown.
