Default 160B Slant Window Windwings

Has anyone with a 1931 Slant Window Town Sedan, in the past, installed windwings ?
Were you pleased with the installation and the appearance ?

What particular type of mounting did you use ?

Pictures sure would be appreciated.

S/W's require a special bracket that allows you to pivot it so the lead edge of the glass follows the slanted window column on the door. The glass should also be cut as a parallelogram so the top edge follows the roofline. I believe there are repro brackets available that are offset to accomplish the same thing as the original pivoting brackets. But the std wind wings will not work. The readily available S/W glass with the bead blasted designs does not look good to me. I prefer cut glass. I had a pair custom cut and the design is beautiful, but the glass cutter did not cut the top edges so they parallel the top, and that bugs me. I didn't notice it until after it had been engraved at a considerable price. Aside from that minor looking feature, they fit the window column well and cut all wind noise when the window is down. To eliminate the noise, the glass must be notched at the brackets to allow it to extend beyond the bracket and nestle against the window column to cut out all wind. If you leave a gap there, you will have a whistle.

Thanks Pat for your insight and advise. John Lavoy provided me with the contact information for a gal down in Georgia, who presently is making me a set of cut engraved glass windwings for our Briggs Body Sedan. We sent her a tried and tested pattern for the glass shape for that vehicle. I agree etched glass does not cut it for me either.
Do you happen to know who supplys the correct brackets for the slant window ?

Much appreciated !

Brian, inquiring minds are waiting to seee how you did it. I have some standard brackets "engineered" to work but it is not the ideal solution and am reluctant to put them on the new S/W. ken

The glass is cut differently for the SW. I had these windwings on a Victoria and now they are on a SWTS. A reputible glass cutter for our cars should have the different patterns that are necessary for any SW car.

Brian, thanks for the pics! It looks like I am going to temporarily position the brackets I have, using double sided carpet tape, and cut out the glass pattern from there. I do want the glass line to run square with the top of the door, and the front of the door. A basic parallelogram, it will be....although in order to obtain a good fit in the brackets, which are actually meant for rectangular positioning, I hope the glass can be shaped enough to allow it to slant back those few degrees.

Thanks guys !!

I found an original set of brackets and had them re-plated. I'll go get some pics and post them later today.

here's the entire wind wing. Note how the edge of the glass follows the edge of the reveal and the window.

this is the upper bracket. You can see how it adjusts to the angle

IMG_0489 by tiopato2000, on Flickr

the lower bracket. Note how the glass is notched so it extends beyond the bracket to fit tight to the door. This eliminates the wind whistle.

Here are the correct Ford issued Draft Deflectors for a 1931 Sedan.

I think A&L makes a bracket very similar to this one

A&L makes a very good replica of the Fulton Ventilating Wing. Unfortunately the are not wide enough for a slant screen door.

Hey Bick! That is awesome! Do you have any pics of wind deflectors that fit the slant window Cabriolet?

Sorry can't help you there. I just checked and Ford did not list a draft deflector for the 68C. This style of bracket relied on upward and downward pressure to hold them in place. They are good because you don't have to drill any holes.

I wonder why they wouldn't fit all the slant window models?

Man !! Those sure look like nice brackets, of either Pat's or Bick,s. I think either set would look just great on my car, but I know it would cost me my first born child in payment. Na! She is married with grown children.

Time to get more discriminating at the swap meets and on "UPay"

Cabriolets are difficult because there is no door top. Just the front leading edge. So, there is no place to mount the top bracket on a cabriolet.

My old 68B had some very rare straight window Cabriolet wind wings. They had a special bracket that mounted to the A pillar on top. They wouldn't work for a slant window though.

A-18278 Was listed for the 190A (Vicky), no listing for the 400A, but as the doors are identical I presume you used the A-18278 version.

The difference must be the size of the glass. I have never compared the height of the glass between a 160 and a 400. Anyway I have a set of brackets that are very similar to the original ones. I know they were on a 400A at one time but there is no glass patterns. Maybe some day I will get a pattern and put them on mine. Here is a picture:
