Default Lost the engine in the pick up

Hey guys, bad day, lost the engine in my 30 pick up today. Broke down the engine and found a broken crank as well as three rod bearings completely destroyed. Not sure if I did something wrong to cause all this or not but was wondering what would be the best course of action. Rebuild it or buy a ling block done already. If I rebuild it what all should I add...inserts, balanced crank etc...

I think we need a little more info. What do you think that you may have done to contribute to the failure ? It seems as though that monster would have let you know that something was going wrong. Where did the crank break ?

I tried to add pictures but for some reason it won't let me. It broke at the number four piston journal. The truck had been running and driving great recently, no loss of power or any noises out of the ordinary. I did have some play in the timing gears and was getting ready to replace it but nothing crazy. The last time I changed the oil I had a small amount of very fine babbit material but nothing to loose sleep over from what I was being told.

I would go with a counterweighted crank, and whatever else is bad, which sounds like a set of 4 rods and timing gears. Since it was rebuilt a year ago probably won't need much else.

Considering the broken crank if you chose to rebuild have main bearing webs crack tested
as it is an A block not a B it should be fine but crack test to be sure

Good point. I bought a block at an auction 10 years ago, and once cleaned up I found a crack at the front main web support.

Here I opened this thread expecting to read a story about how you set the engine aside and couldn't remember where you put it!
