Re: transporting a car
There are different rates for different services. If you post on Uship you will be bothered for MONTHS by brokers who mostly have no idea who will actually be transporting your vehicle. If you value the vehicle, single car personalized service is the way to go. Obviously single car will be more expensive that a 6-9 car transporter. You also have a choice between open or enclosed. (I offer both) The quality transporters such as myself are always booked well in advance, so this must be taken into consideration. If you are familiar with the Hamb, There is a section called the Hamb O Dex. There are 3 QUALITY transporters that advertise in this section : BenD, Racinman Rick & Myself. You can see references posted by the actual Hamb members who have used our service in the past as well as pictures of our equipment.

Re: transporting a car
A couple years ago I was faced with an empty trip with an enclosed car trailer from MI to Alaska to pick up my 35 and haul some Moose meat back. I posted an ad on Craigslist indicating this and that I would haul whatever would fit in the trailer to Alaska. I hauled an unrestored import car from NY, a 4 wheeler, a freshly rebuilt Ford 6 cylinder and an unrestored spare engine for that car. Three different customers. That load more than paid my fuel and motel expenses. Alan, try posting an ad on Craigslist and see what comes of it. Of course, insurance and the normal precautions would need to be in place before trusting someone with your car. I think I charged the guy with the car $1500 plus $200 to go pick it up from NY. It was a 4000 mile trip.

It is easy to get an accurate estimate on-line from nearly all of the major transport companies. Most will offer an estimate within 24 hours. Variables that make a huge difference are : 1) Can the car be picked up at nearly any time or must it be picked up at a specific time? 2) Can it be delivered at nearly any time or must it be delivered at a specific time? 3) Does the car run, drive and stop? Asking for costs here will be fruitless if you are truly interested in getting an accurate quote. Rates change with the variables I'd mentioned as well as the time of year, company you chose to work with, etc.

I ran box ads at the top off both Fordbarn & Chevybarn. I am on my way to the area now with a 1950 Hudson for a HAMBer and a Model T Speedster body ... I haul both project & finished vehicles - sometimes together .... I recently added a page to my website showing current availability: http://www.trulyvintagetrailers.city...sport-now.html I will have 34 feet of enclosed trailer space available once I drop off in Vancouver, WA. You are talking about a trip of 3000 miles - most vehicles are not worth shipping 3000 miles. Most folks would not buy a vehicle that far away unless they knew what it actually cost to ship it ... I would never transport a car unless it was in an enclosed trailer - that route has the possibility of hail damage year round. Jim

Re: transporting a car
I'd used Blue Highways ONCE. Had them haul three '40 coupes to Dearborn and back. Horror story from start to finish.

Re: transporting a car
Might want to start with what it is that is being shipped... an premo 32 3 window, or a model a tudor carcass. One is a Truly vintage worth trip, one is a anyone you can find willing to toss it on a uhaul trip.

Re: transporting a car
X2 on being bothered for months if you post on uship.com when I moved from Mi. to Az. I thought they would never stop calling. I needed to ship 2 cars and 2 motorcycles so I got from 2 different type movers. Made a deal for a 61 Starliner a few months ago and I needed to get my 38 up to Wa. from Az. Ended up renting a truck & trailer and hauled it myself meeting the guy half way. Worked out good for me.

Re: transporting a car
I had a model A hot rod shipped from N.Y to Alaska, enclosed trailer the whole way cost right around $4800. was a major PIA. I contracted with a local company who claimed nation wide service. wrong. it turned out that they used brokers until it got to Seattle. I wanted to use intercity, but they had a 3 month back log before they could pick up the car and even get it to the west coast. There are guys on the hamb who advertise these services, and I would have used them, but none went as far as Alaska. do your home work and do A LOT of research, and check all companys considered on line and ck out their reviews. I don't remember now what the name of the company I used is, I would have to get out my paper work, but needless to say it was a PIA and I was not happy. fortunately the car arrived on good condition other than being very dirty for a car that was supposed to be in an enclosed trailer. good luck.----Jim a few other things, make sure they are insured and bonded, and check their insurance co. I read many reviews of people who filed for damage claims with some shippers only to be put off for lengthy times or not collecting at all. also check with the Inter-state commerce commission on their licensing.
