Default 16" Firestone Rims, adjustable spokes

Can anybody elucidate why these spokes are adjustable? Can regular tires fit on them? Do they require the extra rim?

I'm looking for a 4th one of these rims - do you happen to have a spare? The ones I have use a 'snap ring' . . . what do you have?

I can tell you they don't fit the drums properly, and end up cracking the lugholes. The outer flange that should seat around the drum is about 1/8 too shallow, meaning it doesn't seat. This puts all the stress on the lugholes, ultimately they fail.

I have had those and the Kelsey Hayes (no lock ring).Kelsey Hayes also had them in 19,18,17,16 &15".Adjustable ,meaning the spokes are not welded but laced like a motorcycle or bicycle rim. That thin outer band is a lock ring and yes necessary.Brian mentioned that they crack around the lug holes. That is because a spacer ring is required to mount them on a 32-35 Ford mechanical brake drum, much like if you mount a 40 Ford wheel on a 32-35 drum.
