Front wheel bearing race question.

In taking off my front brake drums and hubs on my "new" coupe, I find that one of the races on the right side has some kind of "shims" all the way around it between the race and hub. The race comes out easily along with the "shim". I would not think this is correct but not knowing anything about this area, I am not sure. I measured this hub where the race is suppose to be inserted and it measures about 1.957 in. (as best I can measure). The other hub where the race is inserted measures about 1.923 in. and this race is in place and will not easily come out.

Do I need a replacement hub? Or is this the way it is suppose to be?

Would appreciate some help for this guy that is still learning a lot about the A.

Sounds like you have some work to do as the race should be a pressed fit. They do make an oversize race to fix the problem. I beleive you have to bore it out to 2", but you are already very close. Rod

your hub had a spun bearing race once that routed it out. Find the larger race mentioned above or get a new hub. I have seen a shade tree method of knurling the hub by hammering a series of deep punch marks from the outside around the circumference of the race seat to bring it in, then pressing the race in with some permatex/loctite bearing lock. Personally, I prefer good hubs to shade tree repairs, but one guy I know did it and drove up to BC and back that way from San Francisco.

Thanks guys. I am thinking that another hub would be the best option also. That way both wheels will have the same bearing types and I will not have to be concerned about them.
