Me and Hillbilly Tim pulled a frame today and after I got to looking at it, I noticed alot of pitting on the bottom of the frame where it set outside for so long. On the bottom inside rail of the frame instead of being straight its kinda wavy. The frame is solid, but my question is: How much pitting on a frame is too much?

That's considerable rust.
Muriatic acid would strip it pretty fast...which might help with the assessment.

Well my vote is too much rust for restoration I would think it would bend with the weight and flex of body on it. Maybe boxing plates could be welded on to give it strenght, or maybe a speedster body.

I'd be looking for a better frame, and it's likely 700rpm will need a new carburetor, too, it would depend on how it looks inside.

It will buff out just fine! LOL

Way too much rust to use in a restoration. If it was in one location, it could be cut out and a new piece welded in. But when it's the entire frame, run it across the scales, take the money and look for a good used frame for sale.

If you go for a used frame, check the tolerances on it and if it needs to be straightened, have it done before you do any work on it. Just my opinion.

If you have read up on Henry, you would know he wouldn't use any more material in his designs than he deemed necessary for the rural roads of the day. That being said, the roads are much better today, however, if the rust has reduced the structural integrity of the frame, I would say any more than 10%, I would look for a better frame. The pictures shown have probably lost more than 25% of their thickness. I would say look for a better frame. With some work, you could fill those voids, but with nothing that will increase the strength of what is there. If you are at the frame stage, and it looks like that, think of the time and expense you are putting upon it. It is not worth the risk. My opinion only.

Thanks for all of the great advice! I believe I will search for a better frame and disassemble this one and rebuild/keep any usable parts. I did get some very good usable parts on this haul, but unfortunately the frame wasn't one of them. It's funny how you look at something for sale, inspect it, and deem it usable but then you look at it again after you get it home and think SHEESH.....why did I buy that? Am I the only one that has ever done that?

When looking for a frame, the best thing to take with you is a piece of string. Pull it tight along the rails and look for frame sag.

It's too much when it gets so bad you can no longer look at it with pride and tell folks that it is "patina."

Put the carb in an electrolytic rust removal tank for a day or two and see how it looks.

Might be more useable then it appears.

I had a 40 ford frame one time that had three holes in it the size of a silver dallor....I thought the car was going to flex or collapse when we pushed it off the trailer...it held up...original henry frame kept the car together!!

I'm here to enjoy the hobby, and enjoy the cars no matter what they look like. Most of the worlds problems are electrical.
