Default water pump shaft to long

im replacing my water pump and the new shaft is too long. so do i just grind it down on a grinder? shoud there be any slack in shaft while i have it out and in my hand. thanks john

Yes just grind it down. The end play should be .006-.010.

Minerva had a MYSTERIOUS squeeking, until I discovered the shaft was a wee bit too long, where it hits the boss in the head.

The reason new water pump shafts are so long is to make up for wear inside original cylinder heads where the back of the water pump shaft has dug in deeply. This is good new for guys with cylinder heads worn in this area because it will take little or no grinding to achieve the proper clearance. It's a bit harder on guys who have bought new cylinder heads or have originals with little or no wear here. A great deal of meat needs to be ground off the back of the replacement shafts to get the pump to fit.
