Default macs 600 oil on label 1 1/2 inches below fill plug

changing oil in trans and differential. do I do as directed on label
on oil container? they say to fill below fill plug.

The fill holes determine the fill level.

Yep, just below the fill plug so your finger gets gets wet when stuck in to the first knuckle is fine. If you happen to end up filling it to over-flowing, won't hurt anything either. The oil expands quite a bit as it warms. These old cars are pretty forgiving.

The tranny has pockets in the drain and fill plugs, which is perfect for installing a small powerful magnet to catch metal grit.

am I correct in thinking adding rear diff oil below 1 1/2 inches of fill
hole ,will keep oil out of rear drum area if seals are not new.

NO, turns and rotational forces will cause it to leak even almost to empty.
