Default Hubs

I have a 40 dropped axle and I need hubs for it. Can you tell me what hubs will work on this axle? thanks, Mike

Thanks to all who replied about the hubs I need. I found a nice pair of hubs. Thanks Mike

What spindles are you using?

The answer is actually pretty simple. Since you're using a 1940 axle, the only two reasonable choices for spindles will either be '37-'41 "round-back" spindles, or '42-'48 "square-back" spindles. Either spindle will work as long as you use king pins for the year of spindle that you choose. ALL hubs/bearings from 1937 thru 1948 will simply bolt-on, although '37-'39 hubs/drums are of the "wide-five" variety with the 5 X 10-1/4" bolt circle. The '40 thru '48 hubs have the 5 X 5-1/2" bolt circle.

'37-'41 round-back spindles will have a "78-" prefix forged into the surface.
'42-'48 square-back spindles will have a "21-" prefix. DD

So I need 40-48 hubs. I have the dropped axle and the round back spindles that the previous owner ran on his 40. The steering arms are already bent for the axle. I'd prefer the hubs inside the drums so 40-48 would be the right ones, right?

If you want help you need to not be a man of few words.
Work with the people that are trying to help.

What spindles do you have?

Do you want drum brakes?

Do you want discs?

Do you want early style drum brakes?

Later Lincoln style?

How about F1?

Wide 5 bolt pattern?

5 on 5-1/2"?

Can you see that you need to give up as much info as you can so you will receive good info.

The easy answer if you have 37-48 spindles is you want 40 brakes and 40-48 hubs with the appropriate drums.

Edit: I was typing while you were replying.

Hubs inside the drums are 40/41(ish) I think these are available as aftermarket (repro).

And you need backing plates & drums to match which ever way you go. If it was me, I would work backwards on this. Determine the type/year of brakes I wanted, then select the backing plates and hubs to match up with them. In my case I like the F1 setup, so F1/F100 backing plates and F1 hubs & drums (this setup requires some modifications). There are several combinations that will work, determine where you want to end up and then we can help you select the parts required to get there.

As Mart said above, hub and flange INSIDE the drum will be '40 and '41. Flange outside the drum is '42-'48. The '40-'41 drums below...hub INSIDE! DD
