Default Reground camshaft

i just got a reground camshaft and was wandering what is the process to get a reground camshaft ground bact to the standard size?is it welded up on the bearing diameters and the cam lobes and then ground back down too standard or is a good core just ground to clean up to another standerd and not too the ford blueprint spec's?

Since there are a couple of camgrinders who frequent this site, I will yield to their answers but until then, it is my understanding that welding warps the cam rendering it unusuable without much repair which is usually considered too labor intensive to be financially feasible. The other method is the heal of the cam has material removed which in essence restores the amount the lobe can lift the valve. The downside is this grinding takes away material on the sides which removes the duration in which the camshaft lobe has the valve lifted. That is why a reground cam is rarely ever returned the original specification of lift & duration.

Brent is on track with his explanation, if you weld on the cam it will warp beyond feasible repair. The time spent welding and striaghtening is not worth it you may as well invest in a new can at that point. If you want to keep the duration the nose radius will become smaller until it knifes out then the cam will be no good at that point.

Both of the above answers are right on although duration is easily maintained and in fact can be increased, as done on a touring or racing cam. The big question is do you want to spend a lot of money trying to maintain the exact original profile or merely have a good used cam ground to mimic the stock profile? At 40 horsepower I think it is far more practical to do a regrind and save the bucks to put elsewhere in the car. Chrome plating the bearings is another answer but again expensive and the lobes still need grinding.
