Default 1948 speedometer question

In the 48 coupe I recently acquired, the speedometer did not work. So I pulled it out and found it to be permanently broken. So I bought another speedometer head and a new speedometer cable. While installing the cable in the transmission end, I couldn't get it to seat into the transmission. I stuck a piece of the old cable into the transmission and wiggled it around and it seems like there is no gear in there at all.

So, does the part on the 1948 transmission come off in a "turtle" shell like on the older transmissions? If so, does anyone have any good methods of removing it since its in a place I have great difficulty even reaching?

There are two 7/16 bolts holding the turtle to the top right side of the torque tube, just behind the transmission. If you jack the body up you can get to those bolts from under the car. You have to do it by feel with a short box end wrench, but it can be done by an old guy who is not slim. Disconnect the cable from the turtle first. I use a creeper to make it easier to wiggle around for position. Also, it was not that hard to get it back in from underneath.

If that fails, the front floorboard has to come out.
