How to remove the U-Joint from my Trans?
Hello All!
I need help in figuring out how to remove the U-Joint from the back of a 1947? side shift 3-speed? If you could direct me to a u-tube or a simple tutorial would be fine too! Thank you in advance! Chris Kennedy |

Re: How to remove the U-Joint from my Trans?
Use a 9/16 socket on an extension thru the splines, work your socket around until it fits on a bolt head, turn CCW until you remove the bolt, then slide the ujoint from the trans shaft. Put your trans in low or reverse to help prevent it from turning. Good luck!

Re: How to remove the U-Joint from my Trans?
You know, you've brought up a legitimate point, and one that remains a pet peeve of mine especially here on The 'Barn.....people asking questions or looking for guidance that aren't savvy-enough to include even the minimum amount of basic background information for a responder to be able to get a reasonably-complete picture of the problem situation. Heck, some of the "sharper" ones can't even remember to include the year and type of vehicle in question. I know that I have a difficult time trying to help determine what type of widget might work for a guy if he doesn't let us know which sort of vehicle he's trying to glue it onto. At the least, let us know your thoughts on what you may, or may not have accomplished so far relating to the question at hand. For instance, "I've removed my '47 Ford torque tube, but I can't figure how to remove the U-Joint." That's almost as bad as the ones that start a thread asking the type of question that results in a myriad of subjective answers, at best. Goober doesn't get an answer that suits his fancy and starts another repetitive thread a couple of months down the line wishin' & hopin' for an answer more in agreement with his desires. Common sense and situational awareness must come into play at some point. Ya can't just "wish" answers to be what you're hoping for. I'm done! DD

Sometimes a little extra information sure helps clarify a situation.

V8COOPMAN;
To add to your great explaination, how and why don't people search Google before they ask questions? Everyone is asking for the easy answer. Or better yet, why not search for manuals or service books before asking -- What do you use? I wonder if there is a Forum for how to tie your shoes? Oops, forgot, I could have Googled that before asking that question. |

What kind of oil should I use in my flathead?
No description; New? Old? Rebuilt? Stock? Street use? Racing? I think it may be new guys trying to ask an innocuous question in an attempt to fit in. |

I know that in spite of being a pretty fair speller, my dumb pride still makes me check with Wiki a LOT to keep from screwin' the pooch more often. Hell, I even find myself making prolific use of the 'Barn's own "search" function pretty regularly.....imagine that, huh? DD |

Or better yet, why not search for manuals or service books before asking -- What do you use?" Exactly what do you think Ford Barn is? Better yet, what do you think Google is? You obviously got some confusion going on there. Ford Barn is here as a resource ... even for the dumbest among us. Ask here first. I can refer you to some "first class" early Ford V8 information on Google that is completely wrong. Stop telling guys not to post here because this is their first stop for shopping. You have no idea of the disservice you are doing to this site. (By the way, those of you complaining about lack of information offered by a poster, ask questions.)

Same here. If everyone could google the answer, what use is a forum?

Because google's search function usually points to the answer on the FordBarn forum better than FordBarn forum's search function. 8^) Jack E/NJ

agree with jack, i always google the question ending with ford barn. but many times folks do not put the real subject in the title. then, no search results.

Having a tough time removing the bolt, the output shaft still turns in low or reverse.

Try it in 3rd gear.....that'll be a lot tougher to rotate than in 1st. Plus, put chocks in front of tires. DD |

By the way, the previous advice to keep the coned washer was spot on. Note that when reinstalling the convex side goes against the bolt.

Re: How to remove the U-Joint from my Trans?
From someone who has asked their far share of dumb ass questions, I always appreciate those that take the time to try to get a clarification. We all know what we are working on but sometimes the details of our problem overshadows that info. We all think in different ways. How for instance does the convex side go against the bolt? To me the bolt is the threaded portion, I have bolts that I use for guides, they have no hex head. So to me the convex side of the washer goes toward the hex head. Just sayn’.

Re: How to remove the U-Joint from my Trans?
Why? I'd do it your way too. But, why? If the bolt head has a respectable, decent surface, what difference does it make? Gimme a good technical reason. (Yes, I'm being 'pickey-assed'.)

You are only ignorant until you ask a question and get a correct answer. (unknown)

Re: How to remove the U-Joint from my Trans?
Why the convex side of the washer towards the bolt head. The compression of the convex washer keeps the transmission end of the ujoint under tension to prevent wobbling on the trans output shaft.
