Default Vega box in a 40 Pickup.

Hi all, I have two questions on this 1. Does the pitman arm face forwards and 2. what is the "blind spot"?

1. The arm faces forward
2. Probably a odd term to describe the center position of a steering box, where it is the
tightest and set to the straight ahead position.
3. Unasked; but a beefier 525 box is a much better choice for a heavier fat-fender ('35 and
up) car.

X 2 for the use of the Saginaw 525. Vega is fine for the '34 and older cars but too light for the '35 and newer.

Yeah, even though you don't like the answers you get, starting more threads rarely changes the facts.

It is, if you post an update to an older thread it moves it to the top of the list and keeps everything grouped togeather.

OK, so being a newbie here I'm still learning the ropes. My first thread pretty much was looking for advice and opinions..I got both and decided to go with the Vega box based on member feedback, thanks . I pretty much knew the pitman arm would face forward, just wanted to be certain. Thanks for the answer to that question. Not sure where I read about a "blind spot" but I did notice and area on the pitman arm to box spline that has a gap in the splines. I still don't know why...

Center your steering box in the sweet spot then install your aftermarket steering arm. Installation does not work as well with the factory GM arm.

Hmmmm......Your MATH analysis is interesting! In your first thread (admittedly...my arithmetic SUCKS), nine MEMBERS gave FEEDBACK. SIX suggested using the "525" box. TWO (not overly-emphatically) nodded toward the Vega. ONE suggested caution if you chose the Vega. So just HOW, on God's green earth, is going with the "Vega" box based on "member feedback"? DD

Next post may be about the joys of owning a $120 "Vega" box.

Actually got what I got. No one came right out and said NOT to go with the Vega box.

If your determined to use a Vega box regardless of all the negatives please use a Vega from Borgeson. You are compromising your safety with one of the cheap Chinese boxes.

Don't know where you purchased the box, but if it was from Speedway Motors, they
recommend using on vehicle's under 2800 pounds. If your truck is under 2800 pounds you are good to go, if not, be careful.

Not from Speedway. Been dealing with a shop down in Tennessee, seem to be nice honest people and easy to work with. The 525 was discussed and we thought it to be the best choice but one wasn't available from his vendor. He seems to be ok with going with the Vega box and sent me the kit but really didn't have any personal experience to fall back on. Thought I'd ask here for opinions and experiences..wasn't trying for a voting session. My truck is all original...I use it for it's intended purpose, It's really pretty and runs great but it's not a show piece. Kind of wanted/needed a Pick up but a new runs starts at around 45K but it will be a cold day in hell before I ever pay that much for any vehicle. If the Vega box turns out to be a bad choice I'll let you know.

Man, you can buy a DECENT, new "Bow Tie" truck in my 'hood for $30K-ish.

IF your Vega box turns-out to be a bad choice, the event will likely be SUDDEN, and the result of that sort of adventure is usually kind'a UGLY. DD

Just went by the Bow Tie dealers lot Tuesday saw new 1/2 ton Silverado pickups priced at around 31K. I wish you luck with your Vega conversion but don't say you weren't forewarned.

The 40 box is an excellent steering box when right! Why not just rebuild your old one?
