Default 39 Mercury Frame

Anyone know if 39 Mercury Frames are same as 39 Ford frames?

Don't know about the 39 Frames but I know the 46,47,48 are not the same. They are about 6 or 7 inches longer. The difference is in the cowl area

1939 Ford and 1939 Mercury are radically different dimensionally. 1939 and 1940 Mercury are the same.

Speaking to the 1946-48 Ford-Merc, the frames are the same, they move the front cross member 4" forward, lengthen the steering shaft and sheet metal. And probably somethings that are not coming to mind right now.

I had a 1946 frame from a Merc and checked out the differences... I still have the steering shaft, and an adapter that moves the front wishbone location forward the 4".

Never seen a 1939, but I'ld take the bet that Henry would not have sprung for a whole run of different frames.

Just a question, what does moving the front X member have to do with the steering column. The steering column bolts to a bracket just in front of the fire wall. I do believe the bodies are the same for Ford and Merc. The difference is from firewall forward and I
know for a fact the 46 column will not fit a Merc. Been there and tried that. Like I said, just a question. I have friends that are Merc guys and they tell me the frames are different from the firewall forward.

From memory the steering box was also mounted further forward to coincide with the axle.Easy to get the starter off on RHD versions.Don't think the motor was further forward which made it easier to get the pan off.Had a special manifold on Right side with outlet further forward to clear steering box.(I think) Cheers.

.

Marvin,

If we increase the wheelbase of a vehicle say 10",
Then the steering box needs to be moved same 10" otherwise you end up with a 10" longer pitman arm which would make for horrifically fast steering.
Which is never good in a panic stuation like sliding on ice.
Extremely quick steering would cause you to terribly over compensate
then things get really scarey.
