Stripped banjo axel threads
I picked up a '46 truck banjo got the driver side drum off using my puller from vintage precision then went to the pass side.It got tight to turn the nut,so I took it off and got about 5-6 threads kinda stripped....Can the end be safely welded when/if I get it off.I'v only got a map bottle torch and wax-penetrating oil right now.Can the stripped threads be re-threaded after welding?

Re: Stripped banjo axel threads
Some will tell you to find another axle.
When mine stripped I first took the axle out and had a smaller thread cut. I am sure it would have been fine but then I found a another axle and used that instead. Install drum retainers after you fix it. |

Re: Stripped banjo axel threads
Post a pic of the damage. I have fixed a lot of perch bolts with the same thread.

Re: Stripped banjo axel threads
I know people who have re-threaded axle shafts to a smaller size such as making a 9/16"- 12 SAE threaded shaft out of a 5/8"-11 SAE threaded shaft but when you do, a serious drop in the maximum torque value occurs with the smaller diameter. So much so, that the recommended axle torque of 200+ ft-pounds cannot be safely achieved. Again, some have done it without a problem but why roll the dice?
