Phaeton Front Seat Removal
I have to re-upholster the front seat in my phaeton. Are there any tricks to remove the existing seat?

Re: Phaeton Front Seat Removal
The cushion just lifts out. The squab requires a little umpicking around the back for removal.

Re: Phaeton Front Seat Removal
I should have specified that it is the backrest that needs to be removed.

Re: Phaeton Front Seat Removal
The backrest spring rests on a set of clips. You will probably need to remove the Hidem and tacks from the wooden seat tackrail, then lift the entire backrest upward.

Re: Phaeton Front Seat Removal
To provide more wriggle room up front?
Every person that drives a 28 or 29 Tourer knows the difficulty in climbing in and out of the front seat. Since the seating is in question please let me ask another relative question starting with an explanation. I have modified my ute by replacing the inner spring seat back with a foam biscuit about 2 inches thick and then pushing the squab under and back. Not perfect but much improved. My Tourer, I had an upholsterer remove the rear set of squab springs and stitch up the cover.A little better but still ordinary. Of course with both I modified the wooden squab mount to allow more room to fit my feet through. Both the Ute and Tourer have different panels at the rear of the front seat; the ute being square and the Tourer being rounded at the ends. I am wanting to remove the Tourer seat back, the inner spring support and replace likewise with a 2 inch foam back but it is not as easy as the Ute because the Tourer does not have a square seat back. For Tourer read Phaeton and Ute read Pickup. Is there any suggestions from readers?

While I have no experience with an export body, I have relocated the rear seat panel rearward on a US version with great success. I have been working on a project of manufacturing smaller diameter steering wheels for Model-As that still look reasonably correct. A smaller steering wheel design would make easier to slide through. Even with the seatback moved rearward, the process of sliding in/out is still difficult with the full-sized wheel. |
