Default Early '28 brake question

Hello:
Did early (Jan-Mar) 1928 cars have separate emergency brake shoes? My friend has a very early TUDOR with 4 service brakes, but no sign of E-brakes on rear. Did someone "monkey" with his car along the way or did the earliest cars only come with 4 shoes instead of 6? Thanks in advance for any info.

Your friends car is correct...the change to the separate E-brake system started in April of 1928 in some assembly plants and was completed by June of 1928 according to the MARC/MAFCA RG's and JS's.

Your friend's car also has different drums, wheel studs, and wheels that should not be mixed with later wheels, as the don't bolt together correctly.

Thanks Pluck and Tom. I'll pass on the information. When I read the RG & JS I still didn't understand how many brake shoes were installed at the start. I appreciate your help.

The early system (some call it the AR system) only had 4 sets of brake shoes. The rear drums were made exactly like the front drums and were interchangeable. Put another way. There was no separate brake/shoe system. When you pulled the Parking brake lever the service brakes on all four wheels locked.

The early cars with the brake lever on the left side used the service brakes for parking brakes as well.
Many states had laws that required the parking and service brakes to be separate systems, resulting
in a hasty redesign of the Model A brake system, which including as well as the change to the brake assembly, the moving of the brake lever to the center just ahead of the gear shift lever
and a change to the design of the wheels.
