Default Rear Brake Shaft Dust Ring

I have installed a new Rear Brake Roller Kit on my Backing Plates. I have made sure the shaft rotates good in the bushings. When I have assembled the shaft in the housing with the dust ring and lever with pin, it puts a bind on the shaft. I this normal? Or should provisions be made so ring does not expand any when assembled.

If you used all the original parts that you removed excluding the dust ring...then the new repro dust ring that you installed must be thicker than the original thus it's binding up the movement of the shaft.

My guess anyway...there should not be any binding what so ever.

Sounds like it might be issue with "parts." Hard to make parts made by totally different machines and separated by 80 odd years fit exactly as they should - an ongoing problem with repop parts.

You might grind down the bushing carrier a tad to make the fit better - or possibly (a better solution?) substitute a regular rubber O-ring for the ring in question?

Or even take the offending metal ring to a piece of emery cloth and put "flats" on both sides to chew up some of the thickness and releve any binding - there should not be binding. Tight but no bind.

Iwould probably do what joe said in the last paragraph . If it binds, the brake pedal won't want to return to the top.

We had the same thing happen last year on a friends rebuild. Had to be the dust ring or the camshaft lever rivet hole distance in relation to the housing. As mentioned, repro parts. We just spread the dust ring to enlarge the diameter so it wouldn't bind. The gap is greater but how much dust will enter with how much and where we drive?
