Did I finally find a GEM?
Hi guys,
I picked up a '49 coupe recently and was told I was the third owner. So a few questions from those of you that know please, Are these floor mats and the trunk mat original? the floor under the mat is clean and black as is under the trunk mat...is that original. The door panel seems original? The underbody is red oxide color every where...is that original? I can't find any indication of metal repair or repainting underneath. The engine runs like a swiss watch. Instant starts, quiet, smooth & 25lbs oil pressure idling warmed up, 50lbs going down the road. (had to have been rebuilt at some point. Your input is appreciated! Thanks Dick |

Re: Did I finally find a GEM?
I have a fairly original 51 coupe as well, and your pictures look very good. If I had to say anything without actually inspecting it in person, I'd say it looks almost too good.

Re: Did I finally find a GEM?
I have a 49 Club Coupe. Everything looks the same as mine except mine did not have the floor or trunk mats. I noticed your stop light switch was not hooked up. are you using another type of switch ? Have fun with it.

Re: Did I finally find a GEM?
I think the mats are original type. Need to bp close to see if they look 70 years old or not.

Re: Did I finally find a GEM?
Take care of that trunk mat. As I understand it, they are not reproduced.

Re: Did I finally find a GEM?
The only thing I see that's repo is the inside floor mat. The original was closer to a dark brown in color, with strips like the one in the trunk.
Beautiful car. Hard to find good early '49s. What's the build date? |

Re: Did I finally find a GEM?
Beautiful car! How hard and brittle is the mat? That is one test, genuine or not time takes it's toll.

Re: Did I finally find a GEM?
Very nice. I do believe the mats are original but I wonder about the red oxide underneath. Neither of my 50's have that but having said that, this is the straightest club coupe I have seen!!

Re: Did I finally find a GEM?
Very nice find! My first car was this very same model in '62 and I paid $25 for it. Of course I had to put a tranny in it. Among other things, new Naugahyde interior, paint, etc. I was only a punk teenager then so nothing went back to original, just whatever looked good. So I couldn't say what is or isn't original but yours is definitely NICE!!
Enjoy the ride!!! |

Re: Did I finally find a GEM?
Hey Guys,
Thanks for the input and kind words; much appreciated. The brake light wires are off to remove the cross member. The trans is out and I'm waiting for clutch repair parts. The mats don't seem to be very brittle and they fit perfectly, especially the trunk mat. Driver side front mat has a few pieces missing just infront of the seat. The picture makes the paint look better than it is. It's a repaint at some point and has quite of bit of checkering...but it shines! I think it was sold because it had clutch chatter that was severe. I'm pretty sure that's now resolved. Need to get it back together to know for sure. I've driven it about 120 miles and it's mechanically great. Good brakes, tight steering and it doesn't rattle. I'm very happy with it. Thanks Dick |

Re: Did I finally find a GEM?
I hate to admit it, but I usually get stuff like this from Rock Auto. You'd be surprised what they carry. The local NAPA store can also surprise you at times if you can get them to understand what you want.
