What size fuse should be used on 1949 ford radio

Valve radios actually draw a fair amount of current, @ 4 - 8 amps, but that being said a 10A fuse should be about right for your application.

I seem to remember that the owners manual for my '51 calls out a 14 AMP fuse. If nobody comes up with a definitive answer, I'll double check it tomorrow.

Yes 10 amp fuse will provide protection for the wire (will just blow sooner),
But for the wire size 14 amp is what is called for.

Checked the online 1953 Ford owners manual and they also recommend a 14 amp fuse for the radio.

You can go lower that the amp rating for the wire with no problem. A person shouldn't exceed the amp rating of the wire in any case. A 16 gauge wire with a short run would only require a 10-amp rated fuse. A 14 gauge wire of the same length would require a 15 amp fuse. I'm not sure what the wire gauge is on the radio.

The SFE-14 is a specific length to fit in the radio's fuse holder. One cannot change amperage as the length will be different.

SFE fuses are just a fast blow type of glass body fuse of specific lengths. They are still manufactured in multiple amperage ratings for different size conductor wires. Here is a link to different ratings.

There are other fuses of the same or similar length that could be substituted but there is no good point to that. Some fuse holders will accommodate different lengths since there is just a spring in there. A longer one will bottom out but a shorter one may still fit.

NAPA has them. Most places do not have them.
