I'm getting ready to complete the registration for a Model A that I'm moving from FL to MA. The first order of business is moving the title over and then registration of the plates.

My question is; what is the best way to do this or should I say what are the pros and cons of the following:

Normal Mass plates, Antique plates, or Year of Manufacture plates (not sure I can even pull this off)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First Step,

Normal plates mean that you can drive the car anytime you want. Also, the insurance will be higher than an antique car rate.

Antique plates (I have) limit your driving time per the department of registry rules. Search on line to find info. Its no problem for me to drive with the limits.

The cost difference is quite a bit.

Moving the title over is best done when you register the car in Massachusetts. It can be done best then and the same form covers registration and title the last I knew.

Massachusetts has compulsory insurance so your insurance agent can provide and make out the forms for you to sign. You do NOT start at the Registry of Motor Vehicles but with the insurance company or agent of the company. If you choose to register as an ANTQUE car you have to provide an notarized affidavit form certifying in legal language the restrictions. Your insurance agent can provide the form or it can be photocopied off the Registry website.

The specialized "big boy" antique car insurers like Grundy, Hagerty, are licensed in Massachusetts so you can check with your present insurance carrier to see if they do business in Massachusetts. You may want to keep the same company.

Is the car currently titled in your name? If not, Massachusetts will make you pay sales tax. They use NADA antique car values that are insane. I recently bought my 30 coupe for under 10K and they taxed me at 20K.

There are a couple ways around it though. You can have a person "gift" you the car with the correct forms, or Massachusetts honors the sale price set by a licensed car dealer.

If you have year of issue plates they are must be un-restored and verified at the RMV. Same road rules apply to year of issue plates as Antique plates.

JC Taylor writes insurance for MA.

If you are just transferring the title (Same owner) you should not have to pay sales tax. Just fees and more fees.

I currently have the car insured with Hagerty and I had a short conversation with them and they will insure me in MA. The FL title is in my name but I'm planing to bring the car to MA and register the car up here to drive.

After posting this, I jumped onto eBay looking for 1928 MA plates but have heard about some of the rules and thought buying a plate from eBay might be a gamble.

I'm think tomorrow I will speak to Hagerty again and see if they can help with the process or have advice for me.

my experience is they are not experts on unrestored plates. As long as they are ledgible and look old, you are ok. if you google, there are several large license plate vendors.

I used year of manufacture plates. Slight fight at reg. but they gave in and I'm

The number on the plate has to be a non-issued number. Maybe Hagerty can check or you can call to the RMV to make sure the number is OK to register. I wouldn’t pay a huge amount for plates until I knew I could use them.

I'm looking forward to trying to find groups and meet whomever I can since I have almost zero knowledge on Model A's.

I rechecked my insurance and it's actually Heacock. Not sure that it makes a difference to this conversation but thought I'd correct myself.

Currently I love the idea of getting original 1928 MA plates so I will try my hardest to go down the path to start. I'm currently looking to check how to confirm that the numbers are usable if I can find a plate.

You can check yourself by going to Ma Reg and typing in the # under PAR class.

I was able to find where to do this once on the RMV but for the life of me I can't get myself back to where you check.

#1 Because it is illegal. Most states give you 10 days to register your cars after you move there. If (when) you get caught there are fines in addition to the normal registration costs.

#2 Because it is lying and cheating to do so (whatever happened to that Golden Rule?)

#3 Because it would be difficult to renew the Florida registration without a Florida address. Maybe you could talk a "friend" into lying for you...but then you'd both be in deep doo doo when caught.

I agree with both comments above. I’d much rather be registered in FL because it’s a much more friendly state with taxes and such. Unfortunately you have to register motor vehicles in the state that you have your primary residence.
