Pickup bed ID
There is a pickup bed listed on eBay currently. I downloaded one of the pictures from the listing. I have never seen a bed quite like this one. I looks like a regular model A pickup bed, but the lower rails have outward bulges under where the fenders are located. I have two beds and both have totally straight lower rails. I can't remember ever seeing a bed with these bulges in the lower rails. Can anyone explain when the bed in the picture was used? The link to the listing is shown below.

Re: Pickup bed ID
Rusty, I know nothing about pickup beds, but just to clarify, are these the bulges you're wondering about? (in the subframe/subchannel). Similar to those found on the steel car subframes. (Picture from the same auction).

Re: Pickup bed ID
Randy,
Yes, my 2 beds don't have these bulges. Your pictures looks like it came from the same listing. Maybe the bed is an early style used when they first came out. Rusty Nelson Last edited by wrndln; 09-09-2015 at 02:50 PM. |

Re: Pickup bed ID
I'll check my '28 Roadster Pick up when I get home.
Maybe it's a Model T bed??? I know mine does Not have those outer Tie Down Hooks on it.

Re: Pickup bed ID
It's a Model A Bed, period. I believe it's the earliest bed that was used on the early roadster pickups. These type of beds set on top of metal sub rails and did not utilize the wooden sub rails that were used in later production. I can't find my pictures at this time. Charles Reese who is a member on here has this type of bed on his early roadster pickup.

Re: Pickup bed ID
Pickupman,
I think you are probably correct. Charles Reese is restoring a early 28 open pickup and he said his bed was like the one in the picture (eBay). He had an explanation similar to yours about no wooden sills on early pickups. Rusty Nelson |

Re: Pickup bed ID
The early bed was 1/2" longer than the later ones also. Measurements can be found in the JS. Rod
