Another rear main seal issue
Spent a whole afternoon working to install a neoprene rear seal in my 272 engine which is still in the car.
Come hell or high water I could not install those side seals with the nails. Just seems too tight. My plan was to install the two piece rear main gasket and then torque the cap down to 18lb. but with the cap torqued down, the side rubber seals would not slide in even with assembly lube . I had to remove the cap 1/2 way in order to start the seals in but they still would not fit in. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG ? There must be a trick to it. I am using a fairly new billet aluminum cap Can these side seals be left out and just filled with RTV in place of the rubber and nails ? Last edited by zoegrant; 09-19-2019 at 09:38 PM. |

Re: Another rear main seal issue
I am sending text to your private message inbox that has major detail regarding application of grease and copper sealer and all sort of tricks you should read. Don't know if it will help in doing a right-side up seal installation though. Still, well worth reading.
