Default Polarize 64 Galaxie generator

I removed the generator for better access to the 289 #1plug. After I reinstalled it the GEN light stays on. I have been told to polarize it. In reading 'how to' on various sites, I am missing something: Is polarization done with the engine running or just the key on or neither???

thanks Rob

"B" circuit generators (most Ford Products) –

DISCONNECT the FIELD wire from the regulator and strike it onto the BATT post on the regulator. When you see some small sparks you are done. Reconnect the field wire to the regulator. You have to remove the wire to polarize a “B” circuit generator. DO NOT use a jumper wire. You will need to do this every time you remove either the generator or regulator for service.

I would wonder how the polarity of the field shoes changed if it was removed while the battery was disconnected. The magnetic field shouldn't have changed if it was functioning normally prior to the disconnect. The residual magnetism in the pole shoes is what get the generator started once the motor is fired up. The cut out relay only needs a bit of current to pull the system on line.

Generally you only need to do it when there is a replacement of battery or generator.

He did remove and replace the GEN during his service repair.

Found the answer in 64 shop manual: To polarize a generator, disconnect the FIELD wire and BATTERY wire from the regulator. With the engine turned OFF, momentarily connect (touch) the two wires.
DO NOT use any method that applies battery voltage to the field terminal of the regulator or by connecting a jumper wire from the battery to the generator field terminal. If you do it will cause excessive current to flow from the battery through the regulator contacts to ground thus burning the points.
