Clutch throw out bearing
I've had a new bearing sitting on the shelf for a while still wrapped in its plastic and in the original box. Today, I went to use it and it is seized solid. WTF!
It is Federal Mogul branded (their number 2065). I expected this bearing to be a good thing, not junk I throw straight into the rubbish bin. There, vent over but has anybody else come across this and it there a fix?

Re: Clutch throw out bearing
It has never been used. It is still packed with the grease put in it by the manufacturer. Maybe I'm missing something but how will that help? I cannot get any rotational movement out of it whatsoever but I can get a tiny amount of lateral movement.

Re: Clutch throw out bearing
I'd warm it up a little...either leave it in the sun or use a heat gun.

Re: Clutch throw out bearing
I agree, trash can last resort, see if you can get it to warm up and get it moving. I’m thinking the old grease solidified and hardened up. Should be good once you get it moving and I’d repack with fresh grease.

I have same new same brand in my bearing bag. Seems unusual that that should happen. Grease does deteriorate over time, but didn't think that that would happen to a nos part ? Anyway, nothing to throw it away for. Just make a hole in it, where you can install a zerk fitting. Now before installing the zerk, heat it good and have the gunk cleaned out of it, install the zerk and pump full of your favorite flavor grease. Last edited by hardtimes; 03-23-2018 at 01:20 AM. Re: Clutch throw out bearing
The grease in the bearing is quite soft and like it's just out of the tin. I'm wondering if the crimp holding it all together is too tight. Might work on loosening it. Bloody FM crap!

Re: Clutch throw out bearing
I too think heat is the answer. Once it moves it'll loosen up.
Are you sure your trying to turn the correct part. Not to insult you I hope, but I have picked up a throw out and just didn't grab the correct places to turn it. Last edited by Russ/40; 03-23-2018 at 12:16 PM. |

Re: Clutch throw out bearing
No insult taken but I do know how a throwout bearing is supposed to work. Breakfast first, then out to the workshop and try to release it.

Re: Clutch throw out bearing
SUCCESS! It's free. As I suspected, the crimp was too tight. Eased it a little and things started moving. Used the lathe to give it some exercise and it now looks good.

Re: Clutch throw out bearing
I’ve pulled some of the original grease out of my 28 and it’s hard as a rock so work on that thing and break it loose!
