Default MAHLE forged coated pistons?

Hi guys, anyone use the mahle forged and double coated pistons? They come with a thin moly ring pack too. I was asking a vendor who sold the scat rotating assemblies which ring pack they included in their ross pistons. The tech told me they were the 3/32 rings but it would be a $64 upgrade to the metric rings OR for the same 64 they would ship out these Mahle pistons. If they were decent quality it seems that the coatings can only be a good thing right?

Nice looking pistons , haven't personally used them yet . Have a friend that is just now assembling his engine with them.
They are narrow between pin bosses to suit Scat style rods , he had to narrow up his 21A rods to fit.
Cheers
Tony

I would be looking at using a scat assembly so the pin boss would be fine. Only picture I've seen of then is a 5 second YouTube vid someone posted

I would assume the Mahle pistons are good quality since they are used by a lot of professional racers.

I've used that type of piston in a 460, but no experience with a flathead.

Yes, these are great pistons. however, they come in two different materials forgings. one is for racing and has to have larger piston to wall clearance for expansion. The other comes with higher silicone content and cah be run tighter. this is used in their OEM pistons. I checked them out a few years ago for a friend, he didn't buy them as they were more expensive than the Ross. Be nice to know what these cost with rings

Hi Ron, I'll get you a price on Monday!

Had a few requests over the last 2 years for some but never a sale, like you stated, they are more than the Ross'!

You're also correct on the material, they come in MSP25 (2618) and 4032, the 2618's will withstand more abuse, e.g., detonation!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Personally we prefer to stay with Ross, as we're very comfortable with them and know 100% there are absolutely no issues. We are a dealer for Mahle but don't use or sell all that much even for other mfr's!

Regardless of Mahle or Ross - try to go for the metric ring package! Buy the best rings you can - it is entirely worth it. On my last set of Ross pistons I ran a 1.5, 1.5, 3.0 mm ring package -- on a 3 5/16 bore. Really the best way to go . . .

Haven't found the Mahle pdf yet but with Ross you can't get metric width rings with a 3.750" stroke, but it is a 3 ring piston that will work well.

They definitely will build them. I spoke to Ross and Red's recently about 3.2175" (+.030) and 3.2475" (+.060) versions for 4" stroke with metric moly rings. For those sizes, the +.030 version would be custom. I'd recommend going through Red's either way.

Dale, I would think the difference has to be negligible between the Mahle 1/16 ring pack at .062 and the metric 1.5mm pack at .059...

Also on cost the vendor I spoke with said the Mahle was the same price as a metric ross piston so

Edit: vendor was cleggengine.com. just found them on a Google search looking for new to me flathead options.

It's important when using any metric ring packs to try to have the block finish-honed with a block-plate in play. The plate really should always be used but most shops don't have one on hand!

It's needed more so for these metric's than when using the older "cast" rings!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. On a side note Ross will make any style piston for ANY platform, 3.750", 4.000", 4.125", 4.250", etc. Also, we keep Ross in 3.228" (only) on the shelf with a metric ring pack 1.5, 1.5, 4.0. The metric rings were & still are popular mostly due to the foreign markets. This particular metric ring combo was used in the mid 70's on the Chev 1.6 liter and they are available in o'sizes, "std" bore is 3.228"+! They were available in +.020, +.030" and +.040".

The Mahle's pistons run $570.00/$580.00 per set, less any frgt costs!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. They are also somewhat limited with respect to the sizes of the builds, not too many choices. They do come with the ring package but are conventional 1/16", 1/16", 3/16" and are on the 4032 material!
